Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Palmer re
turned home Sunday from an ex
tended trip to Salem and coast
points. They also visited their
daughter at Cascade Locks.
Clayton Davis, a prisoner of the
Japs for 42 months, spent the week
end at Lexington visiting relatives
and friends. His sister, Mrs. Nellie
Williams came over from John Day
to visit him. i
Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Van Winkle
received a call from their son Lt.
Alfred Van Winkle Tuesday. He
arrived Monday in Seattle from
Leyte and will enter a hospital for
treatment for wounds.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Steagall,
daughter June and Willie Steagall
drove to Lebanon Saturday to vis
it Mrs. Willie Steagall who is at the
home of her mother recuperating
from a recent illness.
Mrs. Carl Whillock spent the
past week in Portland visiting Mrs.
Vernon Scott while Mr. Scott was
up in this vicinity hunting. Mr.
Whillock and two daughters drove
down the last of the week and the
family all returned Sunday.
Claud Way spent the week-end
at home while his ship is docked
at Seattle
OFFENDER RELLEASED
Delbert Clayton Osborne was re
leased from custody this morning
on his own recognizance after pro
mising Justice Hager he would
raise the money to pay his fine and
get out to work. Osborne is from
Mitchell and was picked up on a
charge of intoxication in a public
place.
DON KNOWLES ON WAY TO
PHILIPPINE ISLANDS
Mrs. L. H. Knowlss of Kinzui
writes that her son, Donald E.
Knowles S lc, has completed his
training for signalman and is now
at sea headed for the Philippines.
Don, who attended Heppner high
school, took his training at Bain
bridge, Maryland. He was sent from
there to Camp Shoemaker and then
to Treasure Island, shipping out
frcm the latter place without the
customary leave.
