Plenty of Work Due on Roads
While home and business construction may be
retarded for many months due to shortage of ma
terials, there is enough work due on our highway
system to provide jobs for thousands of returning
war veterans and war workers. There is scarcely
a highway that does not need repairing, and in
many instances realigning, and once the state high
way commission gives the word hundreds of crews
will be put to work.
In this particular area there is much need of
extensive repair work to primary, secondary and
county roads. Unprecedented movement of timber,
lumber, grain and livstock during the war years
has put a telling strain on the roads, some of
which require constant patching.
There is the matter of eliminating unnecssary
curves, of which the Willow creek highway is a
glaring example. Whether this road is considered
of enough importance to warrant a bit of realign-
ment is something not yet mentioned by the com
mission, for it is doubtful if the matter has been
referred to that body. Yet in the name of safety
and economy of vehicle operation it appears that
the Willow creek highway and other secondary
. roads should be placed more nearly on primary
standards, even to widening them a bit.
It is not expected that realignment of the Wil
low creek highway, as an example, would be a
matter of immediate consideration, even if accept
ed by the commission, for the highway program- is
pretty well set out and contracts are being let.
However, if we want improvement to our local
highway system we will have to begin to let our
wants known. The highway commission has plenty
of demands and it is the purpose of that body to
make the funds at hand go around to the best ad
vantage, but just the same if we feel we have a
good and just reason for seeking further assist
ance there is no harm in trying.

LOCAL DENTIST TO JOIN
BROTIiiLR IN PENDLETON
Dr. Dwight Miller has annovncerl
that he will move his dental office
equipment to Pendleton Saturday
where he will join his brother in
setting up a new office. He plans
to carry on his work here up until
Friday evening.
Dr. Miller has enjoyed a good
practice in Heppner and it is with
regret that he is leaving here. Tike
all ambitious young men he has set
his course in the direction of a
larger field and Pendleton is for
tunate in acquiring his services.
The best wishes of the community
go with him and his family to
their new location.
Mr. and Mrs. Merle Miller drove
to Portland the first of the week
where Mrs. Miller underwent a
major surgical operation to correct
a serious spinal trouble. Miss Rose
Hoosier was a passenger in the
Miller car and is spending a few
days in the city.
Mrs. Florence Hughes returned
Saturday from Portland where she
has spent several weeks under a
doctor's care. She is feeling some
improved.
