4 Heppner Gazette Times, June 28, 1945 EDITORIAL Some Day-Perhaps Mossbackism is something that is supposed to have disappeared along with the horse and buggy days, but Friday's election results leave one in doubt. Especially is this true with regards to, the proposed civic center in Portland. Just when up staters were preparing to congratulate our first city on its civic smartness and progress, the moss backs rally their strength and knock the proposal into a cocked hat. If California and Washington enjoy .a greater measure of prosperity than Oregon it is because they are alert to their opportunities. They have displayed a spirit of progress not matched bv their relatively sleepy neighbor sandwiched in between them. Yet this state has many opportunities for the homeseeker and investor not exceeded by ei ther of its neighbors if our people were only more alive to these possibilities. Upstaters would like to think that when they go to the metropolis they can see as much for their money as the people of neighboring states do when they visit their larger cities. In natural, beautiful surroundings, Portland can hold her head high among the cities of the coast, but dis tinguishing civic features are less apparent than in some of the other large centers. Realizing this handicap, the city's more forward looking citizens proposed a civic center which the crowd with the most votes and the poorer vision rejected. The progressives may be able to revive the proposal in future elections and eventually win out. If MAKE sentiment could be counted as voting strength the upstate support would have made the civic center a reality in the June 22 election. Victory Not Yet Won Where would we be if our armed forces were to set a certain date for the war to be won and then fail to force the enemy into submission by that time? Our future status would be more in doubt than it was that memorable day when the Japs made their sneak raid on Pearl Harbor, would it not? That may not be a fair comparison with the present war bond campaign, yet it has a relation ship that can't be overlooked. Our war machine is engrossed in sending: the advocates of a new As iatic order to meet their ancestors and is depend ent upon the support from home to complete the job. We are nearing the end of a campaign to raise fourteen billion dollars with which to carry on the war several months ahead. Reports indicate that bond buying will have to be greatly accelerated the next few days in order to put the drive over. Supposing the armed forces should say, "Sub scribe that fourteen billion dollars by June 30 or we will lay down our arms." Would we be pikers or patriots? AM If the cigarette tax had become a law it would have afforded an apportunity for many high school young people to help pay their way through school. 1 GOES TO TACOMA Archdeacon Neville Blunt left Sunday night for Tacoma to attend a bishops' conference.
