We Can't Figure It Out
One of life's little puzzles is to figure out why
there are people in the world who are always ready
to take advantage of the misfortunes of others.
No matter what happens, there is always the per
son with ghoulish tendencies to step in and help
himself to things to which he has no more right
than to break into another person's property with
intent to rob.
The theft of rings and other valuables from
the dead during the first hours and even days of
the Heppner flood disaster in 1903 brought or
ders fro'm the authorities for guards to shoot first
and investigate afterwards. Ghouls and vandals
operated here and later in San Francisco during
the earthquake and fire. They operate wherever
they think they can pick up some easy wealth
without being caught.
A case in hand occurred Friday night after the
Engkraf residence burned. A washing machine
motor was little damaged by the fire. Someone
inspected the ruins after the firemen left the pre
miss and removed the motor. This is as much a
theft as entering the premises before the fire and
removing articles. It is not likely that the culprit
will be caught but if he is he will have his day
in court and let it be hoped it will be a long day t
several of them, in fact.
.
The weather man got crossed up on his dates
and gave us nice sunshiny weather for Decora
tion day. There has been a drop in temperature
and today there is a threat of impending rain. But
there was one glorious bit of weather proyided
for the living to remember the departed.

P of W WRITES AFTER RELEASE
Below are a few lines received
by Mr. and Mrs. I. Skoubo of
Boardman from their son Ralph
who has been recently released
from a German prison camp.
"Have been moved from Barth
Germany and am in France near
La Havre, which is our staging area
prior to going home. We left Barth
via B-17s and went over Rostock,
Hamburg, and various other famous
targets. It was really a site. Guess
they are processing them fast as
possible and we will have to wait
our turn to get home which, I have
hopes of being within the next two
weeks. Haven't been staged yet but
have promises. We have been ly
ing around knocking ourselves out,
eating good army chow, running
through the Red Cross lines for
eggnog, and going, to every show
and USO we can find. We are try
ing to make up for lost time. Met
my co-pilot, also all my crew. Just
like home week, even several of
my cadet class mates." "
