MARCH OF TIME: MEMO FROM
BRITAIN. The people of the Brit
ish homeland after five years of war.
Judge Johnson . . .
continued irora jnrst Fuse
In closing his talk, Judge John
son said he doubtless would be
sticking his chin out but there was
one other matter he had to get off
his chest. Briefly, he does not ap
prove of the OPA set-up as it is
now run and he urged that author
ity to pass on applications or any
business that formerly was the
function of the rationing board be
put back there. He said he did not
believe it was a democratic proce
dure for hired, government clerks
to act as judge and jury and that
until that authority is taken from
them and put back in the hands of
the local people serving on the
boards the unpaid people trying
to do a conscientious job the ob
ject for which the OPA was created
will be entirely defeated.
John H Fuiten spoke briefly re
garding his leave to take up mili
tary service. While regretting to
leave family and friends and fully
appreciating the fact that his ser
vices are needed at home, there is
a job to be done, he said, and it is
the duty of every able bodied man
to get in there and help restore
peace and order to a war-weary
world.
Guests were Sgt. Joe Corak, Ho
mer Beale and William Freitag, the
latter two men from the Pacific
Power and Light company office in
Pendleton.
Judge Reappointed
County KOG Leader
Governor Earl Snell this week
announced the reappointment of
Judge Bert Johnson of Heppner, to
serve during 1945 as Morrow coun
ty chairman of Keep Oregon Green
and has asked the chairman to se
lect a strong committee of citizens
to work with him in the all impor
tant work of preventing farm and
forest fires this year.
"As the war draws to a close,"
Governor Snell stated, "we can ex
pect deperate .last minute efforts
by the Japanese to wreak their
spite on us. Such fiendishness might
take the form of incendiary attacks
on our forests. We must be ever
on the alert to make certain that
such attacks fail."
Governor Snell pointed out that
during the 1945 summer season and
even now, it is the duty of every
citizen to take an active part in
the publicly-sponsored Keep Ore
gon Green program, and see that
man-caused- fires just do not get
started.
