EDITORIAL . . .
Greetings of the Season!
As much as we would like to greet our readers
personally it would be an impossible task, and in
lieu of greeting cards, which we have had no time
to prepare, we wish to convey our best wishes to
each and every one for a happy Christmas, with
the hope that ere another Yuletide season there
will actually will be "Peace on earth, good will to
wards all men."
More About Roads
In reporting Judge Johnson's talk to the Hepp
ner Chamber of Commerce last week there were
some errors which call for correction as well, as a
little further discussion of the road set-up in the
county. The error consisted mainly in not men
tioning the roads Judge Johnson discussed and in
putting in one highway over which the county
court has no jurisdiction.
It appears that the upper Willow creek road
from the limits of Heppner to the foot of the Coal
Mine hill is not being considered so much as the
Coal Mine grade., The court would eliminate some
of the bad curves there and widen the grade so
that heavy hauling will be less hazardous. As to
the Hardman hill that is the state highway com
mission's child. What the court is interested in is
the Rhea creek road from Jordan to the Scritsme
ier mill. It is a graveled highway from Jordon to
Ruggs and from there to the mill a country road.
In the opinion of the court the Jordan-Ruggs sec
tion will have to be improved real soon to save
the investment in the original grade. From Ruggs
on some grade will have to be built in order to
provide better passing, especially with log and
lumber trucks traversing the route.
These are not all of the road projects the court
has in rriind, for there is scarcely a mile of coun
ty road that will not call for improvement ere
peace comes, but in speaking of roads the judge
cited a few to indicate how much the county will
share in postwar employment.
As far as the Hardman hill is concerned, assur
ance was given by the highway commission on the
occasion of a visit here that improvement asd pos
sible realignment of the grade, with permanent
surfacing, will come just as soon as possible after
the war.

Remember December!
With that slogan 'Secretary of State Robert S.
Farrell admonishes motorists to exercise greater
tcaution during the winter months. The admoni
tion is extended to pedestrians as well for it is
during the last month of the year that the peak of
pedestrian fatalities is recorded. In Oregon, an
average of 16 fatalities -has been recorded each
December during the past five years.. -The out
standing year was '1941 with 21 pedestrian deaths
in the final month of the year.
The excitement of holiday shopping, inclement
weather and longer hours of darkness contribute
to this heavy pedestrian toll. Each December many
pedestrians are struck in business sections of
Oregon cities as they hurry about their shopping.
Carelessness in crossing streets, vision obstructed
by armfuls of packages or by umbrellas held too
low all contribute their share to tragic accidents.
In order, to avoid these accidents, Mr. Farrell
urges pedestrians to cross only at intersections,
to watch both ways for approaching cars and to be
extra careful after dark.
