EDITORIAL . . .
Don't Forget to Vote!
Whatever your political belief, don't neglect
your civic duty next Tuesday. Perhaps the most
crucial period in American political history faces
the people of the United States and this is no
time for a loyal American to shirk his duty. It is
important that the people's mandate be given in
no uncertain terms relative to the question of
whether we shall have or shall not have one-man
government. Do your duty. Make the verdict clear.

Support the County Hospital
There has been nothing said during the cam
paign but as a final word we want to call your
attention to the county hospital measure, number
318 on the ballot. There is no appareni opposition
to the measure and we trust none has developed,
yet it is essential that a full expression be given
so that the county court will have the undivided
backing in arranging finances and other details
relative to construction and maintenance.
It must be remembered that this is not to be a
county hospital as commonly connected with a
poor farm. It will be a modern, general hospital,
fully equipped and staffed to meet all demands.
There is no other project that will bring so much
good to the county for so little cost. Vote 318 Yes.
For a Strong School System
While there are some features of the measure
which leave an element of doubt the general pur
pose of the proposed constitutional amendment in
creasing state tax fund for public school support
is worthy of favorable consideration. It is designed
to give Oregon boys and girls a system of educa
tion up to the standard of other states. It is not
claimed that it will offset property taxes apprecia
bly but it will provide the means for a more equal
distribution of tax money to give the weaker dis
tricts support which- they now lack. A good school
system is a state's most valued asset. Look for
number 314 on the ballot.
There is no reason why our congressional dele
gation and Wayne Morse should not be 'sent to
Washington. Senator Cordon has been doing an
excellent job in his eight months tenure. Mr.
Morse has demonstrated a capacity for analyzing
political problems as well as legal problems. He is
in accord with Governor Dewey on international
affairs and will be a tower of strengtht to the new
administration in both international and internal
affairs. Lowell Stockman has cut his eye teeth in
the house of representatives and is due. for another
term.
Help Your Schools
If You Believe .. .
THAT Oregon boys and girls deserve educationaloppor
tunity second to none in the nation;
THAT every Oregon student is entitled to the same high
quality of education to which his neighbor is entitled;
THAT the'burden of school costs should be borne equally
by all the people of the State of Oregon;
THAT freedom and equality of Oregon educational op
portunities should be beyond the reach of selfish pres
sure groups who would tamper with it;
THAT the general level of education in Oregon should
be raised

DEWEY DOOMS DICTATORS
The wave of favor sweeping the
country for Dewey has thrown the
White House favorites into a panic.
They were going to have the presi
dent assume an attitude of super
iority as well as indispensability
and just laugh the campaign off.
The grin has been entirely washed
off their faces. They are now push
ing the president into the play as
an anxious candidate full of fears.
He is forced to do stunts he is not
fitted for by health. His backers
are gamblers. They have staked all
on the election. They are now going,
according to the old cowboys' ex
pression, "hell bent for election."
The favorites' see their fat jobs
vanishing. This is unthinkable to
them. They have even declared a
truce among themselves1 and will
do no fighting until afier election.
If they should win you will see the
prettiest scrap ever. The head of
the pack is Ickes He whines and
snarls over the air continuously.
His place is unique. The others will
loose their jobs, but this piet. if the
fourth term fails, looses 38 jobs
and the position of the most pow
erful deputy dictator the world has
seen. No wonder he is mad and
scared.
TRUMAN BRINGS NO JOY
Senator Truman as candidate for
the vice presidency does not add
any joy to the picture when the na
tion is considering the condition of
the president's health. His long as
sociation with the Pendergast ma
chine to which, according to his
recent statement, he owes his whole
political career, is not cheering. If
this wjas the only machine behind
the fourth term campaign it would
not be so serious. Considlering the
Hague, the Kelly, the Flyhn, the
Hillman, the Hannegan machines
which represent the worst in poli
tics of any party, all thirsting for
power and supporting the fourth
term, it becomes a national threat
such as this country never faced.
UNITED WE STAND
Of all the good features of the
Dewey campaign nothing is more
encouraging than the promise ' to
unite all branches of government
into harmonious action. Clearing
up the muddle and confusion with
untold duplications of effort which
characterizes Washington at this
critical time is the primary need.
Without it no progress can be made
in the solution of our home or for
eign problems United effort will
surmount every obstacle. Dewey
and Bricker have the lability and
will to achieve this. America must
have it or loose the battle for
progress. ;
