Hospitality Is Non-Rationed 1 Grazing School Held For Triple-A Force A special school to acquaint members of the local organization with grazing practice routine was held Monday and Tuesday at the office of County Agent C. D. Con rad. Instructors coming for the school were George Bradley of Boise, Ida., administrative assistant of the western grazing division of the Ag ricultural Adjustment administra tion and Merle Cummings of Cor vallis, range assistant. E. Harvey Miller and C. .D. Conrad also par ticipated. HERE ON VISIT Mr. and Mrs.' Harold Becket are spending a few days in Heppner, coming from Portland where Har old is employed in war work. They are using part of the time to fix up around their residence .property. MUST HAVE INSPECTION CARD Applicants for mileage ration are reminded that tire inspection cer tificates must accompany the ap plication before the rationing board can act upon the request: Anyone not informed regarding the regu lation should make inquiry at the office, officials state. Assistance is needed at the ra tioning office in issuing mileage for pickups arid trucks. Anyone having a little time to spare each day will be doing a good service by volunteering for this service. A change in personnel was made necessary by the resignation of Mrs. Ilene Laughlin as chief clerk. Mrs. Harry Tamblyn has been moved up to the chief clerk post and Mrs. Grace Misner has taken her place as price clerk and &!so will assist both Mrs. Tamblyn and ' Mrs. Joe Hughes in their departments. YES, we can still be generous with our hospitality can still have the pleasure of inviting friends for dinner because hospi tality fortunately remains a non rationed item. To be sure, we must do Just a little careful planning to stretch those ration points wisely. Time-saving menus are important, too the kind that the war worker-homemaker-hostess can prepare easily and quickly. For a hearty main dish that usual menu problem serve a meat and vegetable shortcake. Here we have used Creamed Prem and green peas on piping hot biscuits, fresh from the oven. But left-over meat of any kind can be used, or any one of the low-point table ready meats frankfurters, too, are excellent r Meat and Vegetable Shortcake Make a White Eauce of'. 4 tablespoons blndd shortening 4 tablespoons flour t cups milk. U teaspoon salt Add to White Sauce: I cup cubed cooked meat I cup cooked green peas Seasonings to taste Biscuit Recipe 2 cups sifted flour 1 teaspoon salt 3 teaspoons cup milk Vmklntr nnu-der 2 tnlilesDoons 6 tablespoons melted blended blended shortening shortening Make a biscuit dough by cutting the 6 tablespoons blended shorten ing into the sifted flour, baking powder and salt. Add milk, stirring quickly but thoroughly. Turn dough onto a floured board. Knead gently. Roll out about inch thick. Cut into eight 3-inch rounds. Brush tops of four rounds with melted shortening and place second round on top. Bake in a hot oven (ttOF.) about 15 minutes. Separate the rounds. Cover the bottom with the meat and vege table mixture. Place top round on and cover it generously with creamed mixture. - CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank all those who assisted and offered expressions of sympathy in our bereavement. The Smith Family, lone, Oregon.' e ATTENDING SUMMER SCHOOL Archdeacon Neville Blunt left early Tuesday morning for Cove to attend the summer school for the young people of the Eastern Oregon district of the Episcopal church. He will return Saturday evening and conduct services Sunday morning at the home of Mrs. Percy Hughes on Little Butter creek on the occa sion of the annual outdoor meeting. GUEST FROM MARSHF1ELD Jane Shank of Marshfield is the house guest of her cousin Sally Cohn. Jane's mother will be re membered by many Heppner people as Eleanor Cohn, sister of H. A. Conley Lanham is in Havre, Mont., where he was called the past weekend by the illness .of his mother, Mrs. Mildred Lanham, who ia ill with pneumonia. She is some what improved at this time.
