D. Conrad. O. T. McWhorter, extension hor ticulturist at Oregon State college, says that there is still time to plant 'practically everything in the garden with the exception of peas, provid ed water is available for summer irrigation. Certainly there is plenty of time for planing the fall garden. He adds that he has received re ports indicating that commercial vegetable production in many areas has been threatened by adverse weather and the late season. The American Institute of Public Opinion has just reported that thru out the country as a whole about 2V2 million fewer gardens have been planted so far this year than last year. About. 300,000 tfewer families have planted gardens in the 11 wes tern states, according to the public opinion poll. This year's national Victory garden goal was 22,000,000 two million more than last year. The national lag in home vege table gardens, combined with unfa vorable reports of early freezes, lack of moisture and other adverse gowing conditions for commercial vegetable crops in many regions, may make home victory gardens even more desirable this year than last summer, Conrad states.
