Announcement
To the Republican Voters
Having announced myself as a candi
date for the Republican nomination to
the office of Sheriff of Morrow County,
I take this means to appeal to you for
support. My work in the Navy prevents
me from coming to Morrow County to
make a personal campaign.
My enlistment is for the duration of
the war only. When the war is over (and
I hope that is soon) , if I dm nominated
and elected, it is my earnest hope and
desire to return to Morrow County and
again take an active part in its welfare.
My work in the Navy has given me
valuable experience and training that
will be beneficial to me in the perform
ance of the duties of Sheriff.
My record as Sheriff, should speak
for itself and with the added experience
of the Navy I feel justified in asking
and soliciting the support of the Repub
lican voters for my nomination. I will
appreciate any and all support given
me.

EMPLOYER SPEAKS HIGHLY
of
Wayne Morse
Republican Candidate for U. S. Senate
The following letter was written to an Oregon business man by1
Almon E. Roth, former president of the Vaupi Coast Shipmen's
Association and former president of the San Francisco Employers'
Association, now president National Federation of American
Shipping.
April 29, 1944
Mr. Thomas Luke
Portland
Oregon
My dear Torn:
Because of my very high personal regard for Wayne L. Morse,
I am taking the liberty of writing you concerning his qualifica
tions for U. S. Senator.
As you probably know, I have been intimately associated with
Wayne Morse through my activities in Pacific Coast waterfront
labor relations, and more recently as a fellow member of the
National War Labor Board. Through these associations I have
had an unusual orjportunity to judge his character, ability and
political philosophy. He rates tops with me in all three respects.
His keen mind, unbounded energy and facility of expression
would immediately win recognition from his fellow senators and
the American public. If elected he would be a great credit to the
State of Oregon.
-1 understand that it is being charged in some circles that
Wayne Morse is a Communist and pro-Bridges. Such talk is sheer
nonsense. I have read his testimony in the Bridges deportation
case and can find nothing therein which indicates that he is pro
Bridges or has communistic leanings. On the contrary, on many
occasions I have heard him enunciate his belief in the American
system of private enterprise. He has differed sharply from New
Deal philosophy at various times and has taken courageous stands
on matters of principle without regard for his own personal
consideration. 1
I sincerely hope that you and other business, leaders in Oregon
will do everything that you can to ensure his nomination.
At this critical moment, America is in great need of men with
his unusual attainments.
With kindest personal regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
(Signed) ALMON E. ROTH,
President
