Mrs. Mattie Adkins,
County Pioneer, Laid
To Rest- Here Tuesday
Death called another Morrow
county pioneer when Mrs. Mattie
Adkins v. jis called to her eternal
rest Saturday, March 25. Her pass
ing occurred at Portland where she
had made her home for several
years and was the result of a stroke.
Services were held at 10 o'clock
a. m. Tuesday from the Phelps Fu
neral Home, Rev. Bennie Howe,
pastor of the Methodist church of
ficiating. Relatives and friends in
considerable number availed them
selves of the opportunity to pay a
final tribute to one held in, high
esteem by all who knew her. Rev.
Howe read her favorite scripture,
the 23rd Psalm, and wove his ser
mon around the Christian character
of Mrs. Adkins.
Born at College Mound, Randolph
county, Mo. May 7, 1866, Mrs. Ad
kins was the daughter of H. J. and
Martha E. Dennis. The family came
to Oregon in 1880, settling on Rhea
creek. It was there, at the age of
14 that she was converted during a
camp meeting and she remained
steadfast in her belief to the end.
She was married Aug. 27, 1882, to
Frank C. Adkins, who passed away
Sept. 14, 1906. To this union were
born eight children, six of whom
survive. One daughter, Nora, lost
her lite in the Heppner flood of
1903, and the second daughter, Wil
letta, passed away in October, 1943.
Surviving are Ed Adkins of Gibbon,
Cleve Adkins, Newberg, Mrs. Fred
.Elder, Portland, James Adkins, re
siding in Montana, Cyril Adkins of
Alaska, and Conser Adkins of Van
couver, Wash. Of these Ed and Con
ser and Mrs. Elder" were present at(
the funeral services. A sister, Mrs.
Whitehead of Seattle, and a broth
er, Will Dennis of Fairmont, West
Va., also survive.
