MATRON OF HONOR
AT SHIP LAUNCHING
When the ship Joseph Simon was
launched at the Oregon ship yards,
Mrs. Howard Boggs, wife of a plant
superintendent, was matron of ho
nor. Mrs. Boggs s a sister of Miss
Edith Sweek and Mrs. Jack Cou
ture of Heppner.
Mrs. Ray Hausman christened
the ship. Each launching is a fixed
ceremonial which is carried through
with considerable formality. Chris
tener and attendants are picked up
at their homes by a special car and
chauffeured to the ship yards.
When the ceremony is over there
is a presentation of flowers to the
participating ladies, in this instance
large boquets of roses. Lunch is
served in the yards afterwards.
Mrs. Boggs sent her sisters some
interesting pictures in connection
with the festivities.
GOING TO HOSPITAL
Mr. and Mrs. Tress McClintock
and two younger boys, Mrs. Grace
Nickerson and the two grandchild
ren of Mrs. Bertha Johnson com
prised a party driving to Portland
in the McClintock car this morn
ing. The McCUntocks will remain
in the city where Mrs. McClintock
will enter a hospital for a major
surgical operation. Mrs. Maude Ro
bison is staying at the McClintock
home and caring for the older boy.

CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY
A family dinner at her home on
Little Butter creek marked the
birthday anniversary of Mrs. Percy
Hughes last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs.
Lawrence Lutcher and children of
Milton joined the Edwin and Ar
thur Hughes families making the
occasion a happy one for Mrs.
Hughes.
IN NEW POSITION
Mrs. Harvey Bauman has accept
ed the' position at the J. C. Penney
company left vacant through resig
nation of Mrs. Fred Parrish, who had
been with the store the past nine
years. Mrs. Bauman was employed
at the rationing office. Mrs. Parrish
is employed as bookkeeper at the
Heppner plant of the Morrow
County Grain Growers
BRINGS HUSBAND HOME
Mrs. William Smethurst of Lex
ington drove to Portland Sunday to
bring Mr. Smethurst home from the
hospital. He is greatly improved in
health but will be unable to re
sume his ranch work for many
months.
LISTINGS WANTED
There must be several families in
Morrow county who had relatives
in the armed forces at Bataan and
Corregidor, men who lost their
lives or were taken prisoner by the
Japs. I have something of vital im
portance to take up witih these
people and am asking that they get

Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Elliott drove
to The Dalles Tuesday evening and
on to Portland Wednesday morn
ing where Elliott is atending a con
