'Drivers Escape
Injuries In Two
Automobile Wrecks

A car driven by Lester Nelson of
Condon was wrecked quite badly
about one mile above Lexington
Saturday morning when it got out
of control on the icy pavement and
slid backwardst about forty feet
shearing an electric light pole.
None of the occupants was injured.
Sunday evening Ben Grant es
, caped with bruises and shock, but
his car was damaged severely when
it tipped over near the Roy Camp
bell ranch. The car turned over
several times, Grant falling out
when the door -. flew open, which
piroibably sfcifVed him from serious
injury.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hunt and
family were New Year's day. guests
at the home of Mrs. Verle Freder
ickson in Heppner. . '-' .
Clarence, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Ernest Gerard is quite ill with the
flu in the Heppner hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Yarnell and
daughters are spending the week in
Portland. ..
Robert Duncan returned to his
home at Ellensburg, Wash., Monday
after visiting several" days with his
son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Kenneth Marshall.
Jack and Roberta Miller of Port
land visited relatives and friends
here the. past week returning home
Sunday
Ellen Nelson, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs.. Alfred Nelson, Sr., left
soon after the holidays for Portland
to entrain for Camp Lejeune, N. C.
where she will start training in the
marine corps womens' reserve.
Mrs. Ralph Jackson and daugh
ters Marcie and Carol spent the
New Year's holiday here from their
home in The Dalles.
Ralph Leach-who has been a flu
patient in the Heppner hospital for
the past ten days returned to his
home Friday.
Newt CYHarra and daughter Patty
accompanied by Dorotha Wilson of
Heppner, left for Portland Sunday
where the girls took a stage on to
Eugene where, they attend the U.
of O.
Mr. and Mrs. O. W Cutsforth and
family spent the holidays in Port-
land.
' Mr. and Mrs. S. G. McMillan and
Mrs. Eula Barnhouse and daughter
Jean returned Sunday from a
week's visit in Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Smith of
Pendleton were guests during the
holidays at the Ted McMillan home.
Leonard Munkers, A. S., son of
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Munkerg has
been confined to sick bay with the
mumps at his station at Farragut,
Dan Way is quite ill at his home
with an attack of rheumatism,
Mr. and Mrs John McMillan and
family returned Saturday from a
week's visit in Portland and Ore
gon City.
Lexington grange will hold its
first meeting of the new year Sat
urday Jan, 8 at 8 p. m. All members
are urged to attend.
LEXINGTON GRANGE
New officers will take their sta
tions Saturday evening at the regu
lar meeting of the grange. Officers
and members have been requested
to be present.
Irrigon News Notes

W. C. Isom bought the Watkins
place this week. The Embree's have
lived on it for some time.
, The Jack Brownings went to
Walla Walla to get Robert Waters.
He has been in the hospital where
he had an operation for appendicitis.
Grace O'Brien and son Chester
and Mrs. J. A. Shoun accompanied
the Brownings to Walla Walla.
Mrs. Wm. Heifer of Husom and
her daughter Ethel, a WAVE who is
being transferred from New to Cal
ifornia visited the Sinice Moore
family Saturday. Sgt Wilmar Moore
went home with them. "
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bediwell are
moving to Ontario where he will be
the Pentecostal minister. They
helped with the morning song ser
vice and in the evening he did the
preaching in the Irrigon church.
Mrs. Edith Mathews has been
quite ill with the flu and Mrs. Me-,
nefee is taking her place until she
is able to teach again.
MJiss Joan Tade is quitting the
ordnance depot until after she grad
uates from high school.
Mrs, Ruth Smith returned Friday
from Seattle where she visited a few
days with her family.
Wm. Graybeal is recovering from
a siege of the flu.
Ernest Stephens has resumed his
work at the Umatilla ordnance de
pot after several days vacation.
Mr. and Mrs. R. M. McCoy got
home from a trip to California when
they visited Benny who is in the
navy, and Charles who lives near
SanDiego.
School started Monday with - all
the teachers present except Mrs.
Mathews. So many have been ill
with the flu that that we should
not have much more flu to contend
with. . .
Mr. Griffin has started on the
Stephens well after a short vacation.
Avery Shoun arrived home with
his cattle. from the Heppner ranch
Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs.;' W. A. 'Golly horn
were Heppner visitors Tuesday.
. Mr. Kines of Nebraska is leaving
Thursday for home after visiting
several weeks at the home of his
daughters!, Mrs. Don Kenny, Mrs.
Billie - Coulter and Mrs. Frank
French and their families.
Bert Benefiel injured his back
when he fell from the roof of his
house. He was hurt Friday and his
brotheri Otto came from Portland
and took him to the Veterans' hos
pital there.
