Overseas Christmas packages are Out of the way and now comes an urgent appeal from the post office department to mail packages and cards destined for continental destinations early. Prompt delivery will be an impossibility unless the pub lic starts mailing right now and gets it over with during the month of November. That is the state ment of Postmaster General Frank C. Walker. Reams of paper have been used by the depart ment in writing warnings and appeals warnings of the danger of swamping an already overbur dened transportation system at a time when ser vice men and their families will demand most of the facilities provided by rail, bus and air lines, and appeals to do right now what one usually puts off until the day before Christmas. All over the land the newspapers are constantly hammering away on the subject and it is believable that some of this propaganda, if such it may be called, reach es home. To add a bit of urging, let us remember that all branches of pubic service are seriously handicapped by manpower. If given reasonable time their jobs can be done, but there is a limit to what they can do and each individual can con tribute his share in handling the mail by starting now on his package mailing and not waiting to unload the whole lot onto the postoffice at one time and that the day before Christmas. This year's slogan is: "Mail in November. Mark your parcels, 'Do Not Open Until Christ mas.' If parcels are sent out before December 1, 1 it may be possible to handle a small volume of light mail, such as cards, up to December 10, but only if November is really Mailing Month." O On Marking Rural Mail Boxes How many times have you tried to find a place in the country following directions given by some one knowing the lay of the land and yet were un able to reach the right destination without addi tional inquiry? It is safe to assert that most people experience that difficulty in a region where sign posts are lacking. The difficulty is not lessened by the lack of names on the mail boxes." That is one place where a lot of the trouble could be elimi nated if people on rural routes will take the trouble to paint their Tiames on either side of their mail boxes. Morrow county is not thickly inhabited as some other sections where rather populous neighbor hoods exist. To the unacquainted visitor seeking some certain farm this frequently presents a pro blem of much inquiry, whereas if mail boxes car ried the owner's name or if there were a name plate over the gate there would be no problem. A good example of road and residence direction is to be found in Deschutes county and that part of Crook county embodied in the Powell Butte ' district. There you will find the lanes labeled and the names of the people residing along the lanes. Thus, if you were looking for John Doe on Lovers' lane over in Shady Nook township you would be quite apt to find it without personal inquiry. You would simply follow the highway until you came to the lane, the name of which is at the top of the post. Number one under the lane label is the name of the first resident, the . rest following down the scale. This natter was presented to the directors of Heppner Chamber of Commerce Tuesday evening and an effort will be made to' assist in getting several districts of the county preperly directed. It is a move in the right direction. Carried to fru ition it will prove that our ranchers are progress ive as well as prosperous. It has been suggested that the granges take an active part in promoting the program since their membership is largely from the farms and the grange is interested in matters pertaining to improvement of physical and cultural development of rural life.
