Neil P. Doherty, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Neil P. Doherty of Lexington,
has been promoted to the rank of
technical sergeant in the Technical
Training Command, Sioux Falls, S.
D., where he is training as a radio
operator-mechanic. Sgt. Doherty
was inducted Oct. 20 1940, at Spo
kane and received his earlier train
ing at March Field, Calif.
HOME ON VISIT
Pvt Raymond Howell enjoyed a
brief visit with home folks the first
of the week, coming from Camp
John T. Knttght, Oakland, Calif,
where he is in training. He arrived
Monday and departed Wednesday,

NOW CAPTAIN BURCHELL
Word was received by Mrs. Bur
chell last week from her husband
that he now is Capt. Edward Bur
chell. First word of the promotion
was sent by telegram and this was
followed up by a letter. Capt- Bur
chdl again is stationed at Camp
Edwards, Mass. after making the
rounds of several technical schools
in widely separated sections of the
country. He is executive officer of
his battalion and second in com
mand. RATES SPECIAL INSTRUCTION
One of the high ranking Blue-
jackes in his recruit training com
pany, Donald R. Miles, 20, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Miles Board -man,
was selected for special train
ing and as a result is now enrolled
in the school for fire controlmen at
the U. S. naval training station,
Great Lakes, HI. He will receive 16
weeks of instruction under the sup
ervision of an experienced chief
petty officer. Upon completion of
the course he will be eligible for
promotion to a third class petty
officer rating and be assigned to
duty with the fleet or at a shore
station.
ANOTHER LETTER COMING
Bert Mason Jr. has written his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Mason
of lone, another interesting letter
which the Gazette Times hopes to
have the privilege of publishing.
Young Mason writes intelligently
of his surroundings without reveal
ing anything of a military nature
or of his location.
A FLYING VISIT HOME
Chester Brown, member of the
navy "Sea Bees," was met at the
Pendleton air port last Thursday
by his wife and Mrs. H. E. Bauman.
He has a short furlough after be
ing released from a hospital in Se
attle where he had been sent after
receiving serious injuries in pur
suance of his duties. He and Mrs.
Brown left Saturday for Portland
and Lebanon for a week's visit with
relatives before he reports back
on June 13. He will fly south from
Portland.

Sgt. Don Turner writes his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Turner,
that he is now located at Camp
Roberts, in California.

Lucas Place to Have
New Location
Forced to give up their present
location due to sale of the property
to the Heppner Church of Christ,
Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Lucas have pur
chased the residence property of
Mi-s. Emma Jones and will take
possession as soon as Mrs. Jones
can vacate.
Mrs. Jones plans to move to the
house adjoining the apartment
building. This house is now occu
pied by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Van
Horn.
Mrs. Lucas will continue opera
tion of the "Lucas Place" in the
new location and is planning some
alterations to facilitate serving of
meals and caring for lodgers.
REPORTS TO NAVY
Philip Cohn, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Harold Cohn and member of the
Class of 1943, Heppner high school,
went to Portland last Wednesday
to investigate signing up for navy
duty and was pronounced prysical
y fit and ordered to report at Camp
Farragut for his starter course.
Phillip returned home for a couple
of days and left Sunday morning.

ka, he has been engaged in Scout
work since 1921, entering the work
professionally in 1924; was deputy
national Scout commissioner for
Boy Scouts of America in charge
cf scouting and sceutleader train
ing at Lingnan university, Canton,
China 1925-28, and scout execu
tive of the central Washington
ceundl, 1928-1943; veteran of first
World war. He was introduced to
Heppner Scouts last week by Cliff
Hansen, retiring scout executive.
Special Services to
Close Summer School
Special services at St. Patrick's
church Sunday will mark the close
of the 1943 summer school con
ducted by the Catholic church, an
nounces Father Francis McCor
mick. Special feature will be the
administration of First Holy Com
munion to Leola Gorger, Kay Mc
Laughlin, Larry Burchell and Mi
chael McLaughlin.
The Communion breakfast will be
served at the rectory immediately
after mass, with the mothers par
ticipating. A total of 50 grade school children
attended the summer school con
ducted by Sisters Lucida and Mar
garet Joseph, who came from St.
John's convent at Wasco, Calif.,
where Sister Lucida is Sister Su
perior. In the work of teaching they
were assisted by Margaret Glavey,
Patricia Kenny, Colleen Miller and
Betty Cunningham.
Members of St. Patrick's parish
and the pastor have extended to the
school board their sincere appre
ciation for the privilege of using
the school, as well fs for the kind
snd thoughtful services rendered by

ating from a serious heart ailment.
