MOYER, Executrix. , 3-7 ! r --. 71" ' i " ii ' ' ' ' i WASTE KITCHEN FATS HELP WIN THE WAR? For OWI United Nations Glycerine Stockpile on Decline Declares County Salvage Chief Unless every possible drop of kitchen fat is salvaged, the United Nation's glycerine stockpile soon will be exhausted, C. D. Conrad county salvage chairman, warned today. "In the kitchens of the world a modem tortoise-and-hare race is being, run against time and against an enemy," Conrad said, "and its winner may well decide the peace." "Think of Germany as the hare. Six years ago, even then anticipat ing the conflict to come and re membering what happened in the last war, Germany initiated a vast program of fat salvage. Househol ders were required to install grease traps in their kitchen sinks. The sewage system of the nation was re built to catch any fats which es caped the traps. Carcasses of ani mals were collected and boiled to secure their fats. "Germany well knew what can happen to a nation short on fats and grease. England in the last war had succeeded in cutting off Ger many's supply of imported oil and fats and the resulting shortage played a major role in the final de feat of Die Vaterland. "Now the larger part of the fats and oils supply of the United Na tions has been cut off. As a result they are faced with a shortage of glycerine, by-product of fat. Gly cerine is an essential ingredient of many war weapons. It is used in cordite, Britain's propellant pow ant powder; in dynamite and ni-tro-glycerine. It is used in gyro stabilizers, in ships' compasses, in the mechanisms which release the depth charges. It is necessary in' resin form as protective coatings for ships, tanks and guns. It is a vital ingredient in many of the medications which heal soldiers' wounds. "One tablespoonful of fat a day is all that's required from the women of Morrow county." Conrad conclud ed. "That small amount, multiplied by millions of homes, will be suf ficient to supply our part in keep ing the glycerine stockpile at a safe figure."
