Supplemental Feeding
Suggested es Aid to
Undernourished Lambs
Reporting that a cross-section
in four Willamette valley counties
has shown that 40 percent of the
sheep flocks in the Willamette val
ley are now in very poor condition,
two Oregon State college special
ists have recommended creep or ,
supplemental feeding as a means of
adding from 10 to 20 pounds of
meat at marketing time.
" Feed and weather conditions have
been responsible for the thin con
dition of sheep of many farms, ac
cording to Dr. J. N. Shaw, head of
the veterinary medicine depart
ment and M. A. Lindgj-en, exten
sion animal husbandman. .In their
thin condition, the sheep also have
been more susceptible to the rav
ages of intestinal parasites.
Because grass has been slow in
starting, these thin ewes are not
able to produce enough milk for
their lambs and the only way to
make market lambs is to supply
grain, the specialists point out. They
suggest that creeps small enclosures
in which the lambs may enter but
which exclude the old sheep, be set
up in pastures for supplemental
feeding of lambs in addition to the
small amount of milk they may ob
tain from the ewes. If this is done,
they warn that there is likely to
be a large number of 35 to 50 pound
thin lambs at weaning time.
A creep with uprights on the
side or corners spaced so that a
lamb can enter but the old sheep
are kept outside can be constructed
of unused boards or poles available
on the farms, according to Lind
gren. Inside the creep may be a
trough or a self-feeder in which a
supply of ground grain is available
The trough should be constructed
in such a manner that that the
lejnbs cannot get their feet into it.
Most any of the grains available
are suitable for this purpose. As the
lamb grows older and his teeth
haiden, whole grain can be substi
tuted gradually for ground grain.
Some feeders have found it help
ful to sweeten the grain mixture at
the start with a small amount of
molasses, using one pound of mo
lasses to 10 or 15 pounds of grain
in order to coax the lambs to use
a creep. Oil meal, if obtainable, at
the rate of one part to nine pails
of grain also improves the mixture.
Experience has shown natural con
centrating points of the flock are
the best locations for creeps.
