Community Dinner

umnity dinner at the Leach hall
Christmas day were Mr. and Mrs.
Earl Warner and Janet Hayes, Mr.
and Mrs. George Peck, Mr. and Mrs.
Alex Hunt, Mr. and Mrs. William
Smethurst and Betty, Mr. and Mrs.
Arthur Hunt and family, Sherman
Tucker, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Ruhl and
Norman, Mr. and Mrs. Laurel Ruhl,
Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Majeski and
family, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hunt
and family, Mrs. Laura Scott, Mrs.
Melissa Stonebreakr, and ten sol
diers from Camp Heppner. Gifts
were exchanged and a good time
was had by alL
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Whillock and
dai ighters spent Friday evening and
Saturday in Spray with relatives.
Vernon Scott, John Miller and
Marvin Cox who are working in
Portland spent the Christmas holi
days with their families here and
returned to Portland Sunday.
Janet Marquardt, who spent the
summer with her aunt and uncle,
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Marquart, is
now employed in Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. J. F. McMillan,
Laverne and Denny, went to Port
land the Friday before Christmas
and will return after" New Years
day.
Ralph Jackson was a business vi
sitor in Spray Saturday and Sun
day. Jerrine Edwards, second daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs.. A. M. Ed
wars, was operated on for appen
dicitis Tuesday in the Heppner
hospital.
Sherman Tucker spent the holi
days here with friends and rela
tives. Friday night he went to Ore
gon City to visit a sister and her
family, then Sunday left again for
his army duties.
Kenneth Jackson motored to Port
land Saturday morning on his way
back to the University of Oregon.
He was accompanied by Hugh
Crawford Carl and Bill Marquardt.
The Marquardt boys brought a new
car home.
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Breeding and
family spent the holidays in Spray
with Mrs. Breeding's parents.
Christmas day guests at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Merritt
Gray were Mr. an Mrs. Gene
Grey, Bobby and Florence of Stan
field, Mrs. Nettie Davis and Jim
my, Skippy and, Dicky Ruhl.
Bert Thornburg of Heppner who
has been spending several days
here, was a dinner guest at the A.
' M. Edwards home Friday.
Mr. and Mrs. S. G. McMillan,
Mrs. Eula Barnhouse and Jean mo
tored to Portland Saturday for a
short stay.
Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Carmichael
motored to Irrigon Monday to vi
sit Mr. and Mrs. Ladd Sherman
and daughters.
Those gathered at the C. C. Car
michael home on Monday night to
see the moving pictures on local
and national current events shown
by Fred Crawford of Pendleton
were Mr. and Mrs. Don Pointer
and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Burnside, Elwynne Peck, Mr. and
Mrs. Roy Wiliams, Mrs. .Merritt
Gray, and Joe Westoff of Heppner.
A party was given at the grange
hall Monday evening in honor of
Henry Rausch, Jr., who has been
serving with the army in Ireland;
and for the boys who left Tuesday
night for induction into the armed
forces.
Donald Campbell motored to Ar
lington Tuesday. He was accom
panied by Mrs. William Van
Winkle.
Miss Frieda Breeding returned
home Monday after convalescing
two weeks at the Corda Saling
home following an appendectomy.
Mrs. Edna Turner was ill Mon
day at the Merle Carmichael
home. Her first and second grades
were taught by high school girls.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Williams and
Doris spent Friday at the Lonnie
Ritchie home in Heppner.
Word has been received from
Pvt. George Steagall that he is
stationed at Fort Custer, Mich., and
likes his work very much.
Guests at the Wiliam Van Win
kle home Friday were Mr. and
Mrs. Herman Green and son of
Heppner and Alfred VanWinkle who
had a three day furlough before
leaving for officers training school
in Virginia. Also on Christmas day
the Van inkles received word that
their son, Bill, had been sent over
seas.
Christmas dinner guests of Mr.
and Mrs. Charles Buchanan were
Ralph Leach and Mr. Buss who
is staying in town a short while
to deliver religious messages and
.literature.
Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Papineau for dinner Friday includ
ed Irvin Allen, Billy Nichols and
E. J. Evans. After dinner the
group with the exception of Mir.
Evans, went to Hanford, Wash, to
visit relatives and returned late that
night.
Christmas day guests at the Ver
non Scott home were Mr. and Mrs.
Lee Sprinkel of Heppner.
Frances Papineau was a Saturday'
night guest of Altha Greggs in
Heppner.
Mrs. Henry Rausch spent Monday
at the Al Fetsch home.
Mr. and Mrs. Everett Crump of
Hermiston spent the week-end vis
iting here and in Heppner.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Breshears
spent Friday at the Douglas Gib
son home in Hermiston.
Doris Klinger is moving to Her
miston the first of the year where
she will be employed.
Business visitors in Heppner this
week were Mr. and Mrs. Oris Pad
berg and Charlie, Mr. and Mrs. Mer
ritt Gray and Mr. and Mrs. Carl
Whillock and daughters.

During Holiday Period

The holidays were spent with
many families visiting: Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Reed visited their daughter
Lucille in Portland; Mrs. Maud
Robinson and small grandson were
in Heppner; Mr. and Mrs. Darral
Farrens went to Condon, also Mr.
and Mrs. Al Lovgren and son; Miss
Nona Inskeep visited at Lonerock
and Archie Bechdolt at Boardman
with his parents;; Mr. and Mrs.
Stanley Robinson at Heppner, while
Mr. and Mrs. Jay Stone and Dicky
and Floyd Reed visited in Spokane.
Mr. an Mrs. Iver Nelson and
daughter Thelmo visited the Carol
Robes here; Mr. and Mrs. Duff Mc
Kitrich and son visited the J. B.
Adams'. Mrs. Allen Billings visited
with her daughter and her mother.
Mrs. C. H, McDaniels returned to
Arlington with her.
Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Hastings re
ceived word that Pvt. Claude Hast
ings was sent from Ft. Lewis to
Tennessee.
Sgt. Creston O. Robinson is spend
ing his ten-day furlough, with his
porents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Robin
son. He is located at the Pendleton
air base.
Mr. and Mrs. J. J. McDonald of
Heppner were in Hardman a short
time Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Carmichael
of Lexington were guests Saturday
evening at the Owen Leathers home.
Mr. and Mrs. Dallas MsDaniel
were in Lexington on Christmas.
Mr. and Mrs. Neal Knighten and
children spent Sunday night with
the Joe Battys at Kimberley.
Frank McDaniel returned to the
Oren and Deb Wright ranch on Rhea
creek after spending several days
at home.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam McDaniel Jr.
of Heppner spent a few days in
Hardman. They announce the wed
ding at Lewiston, Ida., on Dec 29 of
their daughter Maxine to Joseph
Mahon. The young couple will be
at home in Heppner after the first
of the year. '
Mrs. Oren McDaniel and children
spent the vacation at their mountain
home near Burton valley.
Miss Mary Mclntyre spent a few
days at the ranch and in Heppner
from Pendleton where she is em
ployed. Earl Gilliam of Heppner worked
on the high school heating equip
ment during vacation.

in Portland with his sons Clair and
Vernon and their families, and his
daughter, Mrs. Robert Smith.
The Sam Umikers of Castle Rock
and Ben Netters of Portland spent
Christmas with their mother Mrs.

Pattie Jo and Tommy Lee Coul
ter returned home after a week
spent in Portland with an aunt.

Don Houghton left for CorvaUis
Sunday to continue his studies after
spending his vacation with his pa
rents, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Houghton.
He is in the navy reserve.
Delbert Walpole reported in Pen
dleton Monday for his mental test
and continued on to Portland for
his physical test as he is joining
the navy.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralbert Dexter of
Portland spent the holidays with
his sister, Mrs. Dan Hill, and the
Bert Dexters of Umatilla.
Shelly Baldwin and Mose Duran
were Irrigon visitors Tuesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cooper and
little son spent Christmas with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Steph
ens and family.
Mrs. Allie Lorenzen of the Irri
gon cafeteria spent Christmas day
in The Dalles with Mrs. Sauters
and family.
Mrs. R. M. McCoy returned from
Island City Monday. She had been
visiting her daughter Mrs, Frank
Steward and family.

Cloy Dykstra was in Heppner the
first of the week looking after busi
ness affairs. He is located in Portland.

Mrs. J. O. Kincaid of lone spent
Monday in Heppner transacting bus

Dr. and Mrs. Dwight Miller re
turned the first of the week from
Oregon City where they spent
Christmas and the week-end with
relatives.
