Scrap Iron Quota
At lone Doubled

Two cars were provided for the
scrap iron here, but from all ap
pearances, that amount will be
doubled. It would probably be pos
sible to construct a pageant of the
argicultural history of the county if
some informed person had time to
sort the scrap, as there are farm
implements of all ages and periods,
commencing with old "sod busters,"
such as was used in the middle
"west.
Bert Mason, Jr., photographer's
mate, third class, writes his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Mason, that
he has been assigned to Fleet Air
Photographic Squadron, No. 1; the
first photographic squadron in the
Navy which was commissioned
Oct. 1.
Roy W. Lindstrom left Friday
evening with other Morrow county
draftees for the induction center at
Fort Douglas, Utah.
Glen Warfield son of James War
feild. and Robert Wagner, son of
Mrs. Jack Wagner of Roardman,
have enlisted in the Marines, and
will report in Portland for duty
next Saturday.
Martin Bauernfeind, Morgan post
master, returned Monday evening
with a nice buck acquired on a
hunting trip to Top.
Cleo Drake brought the first buck
into lone.
Mr. and Mrs. P. G. Balsiger of
"White Salmon visited old friends
here the first bf the week.
Mrs. Ida Coleman and her mother-in-law,
Mrs. Steena Schleevodght
are in Minnesota, visiting rela
tives and old friends.
Mrs. Ed Buschke of Morgan has
returned from "a visit with her
son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Ailey Peck at La Comb.
G. C. Gordon came up from Port
land last Week for a few days visit,
He is a brother of Mathew Gordon.
Carl Davis, who has been a guest
at the Laxton McMurray home,
has gone to Hermiston to work.
Carl Troedson, who is employed
at Hermiston, was a visitor here
Wednesday.
David Rietmann brought his wife
a :d infant son, Harold Walter, home
from the hospital at Hood River
Tuesday. Mrs. Wemer Rietmann re
turned from The Dalles with them.
Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Yarnell
and family of Lexington are visit
ing Mrs. Yarnell's parents in New
berg. George N. Ely and A. A. McCabe
returned Sunday from Ritter
Springs where they have been en
joying a vacation.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Chapman of
Coeur D Alaine, Idaho are living in
the old George Frank house at the
upper end of Main street.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Pettyjohn of
Hermiston spent Sunday in lone,
Mrs. Pettyjohn's sister, Mrs. Lloyd
Morgan returned home with, them,

dies held an all day meeting at the
Masonic hall, making preparations
for the district meeting which will
be held here Oct. 19.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gorger are
preparing to move into the house
they recently purchased from Lax
ton McMurray.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl J. Blake of
Heppner were Sunday dlinner
guests at the W. J. Blake home.
Elmer Griffith of Morgan escaped
serious injury, but was painfully
scratched and bruised Sunday when
a pile of sacked barley fell on him
in his grain warehouse.
Mike Miller of Salem is here vis
iting his sister. Mrs. Garland Swan
son. He is to be inducted into the
army soon.
The Pf T. A gave a reception to
the teachers at the school house
last Friday evening. The president
of the organization, Mrs. James
Warfield presided, -; and a pleasing
program of music and readings was
presented. Refreshments were serv
ed in the lunch room and the re
mainder of the evening was spent
in dancing.

Pine Ciy club met Wednesday
with a good attendance. A hand
kerchief shower was given in honor
of Fay Finch.
Miss Marie Healy, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. John Healy, spent
the week-end with her parents.
Miss Healy works in the First Nat
ional bank of Portland.

coma spent Monday night and Tues
day visiting Mr. and Mrs. A. E.

Hardman Spuds
Prize Winners

The 4-H Club girls of Hardman
made a very good record with
their gardens at the county fair.
Clarice Moore, received first prize
with her exhibit of Irish potatoes,
and second with beans; $1.50 in all.
Maxine McDaniel received second
prize with her carrots, others won
prizes that are not known at this
time.
' Both schools have been very busy
gathering scrap iron. The county
truck came and hauled it to Hepp
ner. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Reed received
word that their nephew, Ted and
brother of Floyd Reed was on the
water now for destination unknown.
He enlisted in the Navy early last
fall.
Foster Collins was seeing a doc
tor in Heppner Monday for blood
poisoning in his hand. It started
from a boil.
Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Carlson moved
from Tupper ranger station Tuesday,
to Cold Springs, where he will be
stationed for a month.
Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Adams and
sons returned from Portland after
spending several days with a daugh
ter, Mrs. Clarence Rogers. Mr.
Ruhl Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Buel Harshman of
Hardman are the parents of a dau
ghter, Nancy, born at the Heppner
hospital Friday night. The baby is
the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Dan Way of this city.
Mrs. Alex Hunt underwent a ma
jor operation at the Heppner hos
pital Friday.
Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Gibson of
Hermiston spent several days at the
Charles Breshears home this week.
James Hayes of Corvallis is visit
ing his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Earl Warner.
Jerry Scott was a supper guest
of Clair Hunt Thursday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Al Fetsch and son
have moved into the Congregational
parsonage.

day night for Ogden, Utah, where
he was to report for duty.
Sergeant Donald Andiues, of the
army air corps was a week end
visitor with the Fred Reeds, from
Pendleton air base.
Mr. and Mrs, J. L. Hartley and
son of Spokane are spending a few
days with the Fred Reeds on busi
ness. Dallas McDaniel received a badly
injured ankle, while falling logs
the saw dropped and cut his ankle.
Infection set in and he has been con
sulting a doctor for several days.
