Graders Organize
For Service Work
Class activities in the Lexington
school are now organized and the
young people once again are busy
with service work. In a recent
meeting the pupils of the seventh
and eighth grades, taught by Mrs.
Lillian Turner, affected their organ
ization, a report of which submitted
by LaVonne McMillan, secretary
is given verbatm:
"Organzaton of the seventh and
and eighth grades of the Lexington
grade shocol for 1942-1943.
"At a meeting called by Mrs. L.
C. Turner the following officers
were elected: president, Aubrey
Majeski; vice president, Lorine
Van Winkle and secretary-treasurer,
LaVonne McMillan.
"The school yard was discussed
and Lorine Van Winkle and La
Vonne McMillan were appointed to
see Mr. Burton about the weeds.
"We voted to have a defense
stamp booklet. Carolyn Bauman
was appointed to secure it.
"It was decided that we gather
scrap iron and other things needed
for defense work. Gene Cutsforth
was appointed chairman of this
project.
"It was decided that we have a
meeting every Friday afternoon.
"There was no other business so
the meeting was adjourned."

Mrs. Harold Cohn entertained 20
youngsters at a birthday party for
her daughter Sally last Friday aft
ernoon. Games and stories enter
tained the children until refresh
ment time, when punch, cake, cook
ies and ice cream were served, with
favors in attractive nut cups. About
ten mothers were also treated at
th? party.
Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Bleakman of
Monument were in Heppner a short
time Wednesday while enroute to
Cecil to vi.'l.t at tbfr home of
their son-in-law and daughter, Mr.
and Mrs. Herbert Hynd.

Named at Hardman

borhood leaders in the Hardman
section have been named as follows:
Neal Knighten and Elsa M. Leath
ers, Hardman; Muriel Palmer, Rood
Canyon; Frances Leathers Reed's
Mill, and Eva Robinson the Camas
Prairie district. This committee will
be glad to assist you with any prob
lem that may arise. Elsa M. Leath
ers will receive any contributions
of scrap iron, rubber, fats in short,
your junk you may wish to donate.
This will be sent to the receiving
station at Heppner.
Ray Patterson entered high school
here Monday as a sophomore. He
was a student here last year.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Reed went to
Spokane Thursday to get a part
for the mill that was broken. They
returned Saturday.
Sammie McDaniel is suffering
from a back injury and was in
Heppner over Wednesday and
Thursday under a doctor's care. He
is slowly improving at the time of
this writing.
.Mrs. Jim Hams and son La Verhe
went to Pendleton Sunday. Mrs.
Hams went to see her new grand
daughter who arrived Sept.. 22. The
small girl weighed two pounds OVa
ounces. It is thought she will be
named Linda La Verne.
Miss Alta Stevens is visiting a
few days at her home here from
Heppner where she has been work
ing before she goes to Monument to
visit her sister, Mrs. Stanley Mus
gvave. Everett Hadley and Elmer Steers
went to Spokane Friday night for fi
nal examination and returned home
Sunday. Everett passed and will re
port at Orgen Utah, in two weeks,
while Elmer was rejected.

Knighten from Top were in Hard
man Sunday looking for seed rye.
CUie Hastings spent the week
end at her home in Kinzua.

two children of Hillsboro are vis
iting this week with Mr. Coats' fa
ther, Henry Coats and Grandma
Coats besides friends and other rel
atives. Joyce Buschke was forced to quit
school this week when it was learn
ed she is suffering from leakage of
the heart and rheumatism. She was
in the fifth grade.
Mrs. C. H. McDaniel "left Sunday
with her son Everett, to visit her
father, Charles Emory at Jefferson
and relatives in Portland.

Boys in Armed Service
Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Hastings of
Hardman received word this week
from their son, Guy E. Hastings,
who is in Fort Riley, Kan. He is
in the same camp as Joe Louis.
RETURN FROM SOUTH
Mr. and Mrs.L. E. Dick returned
last Wednesday night from a trip
which took them to the McKenzie
river where they stayed at Belknap
springs, and then to the coast
where they spent a week at Ya
chats, fishing in the ocean From
there they went to California where
they visited their son Kemp who is
stationed at Camp McQuade. They ,
stopped at San Francisco and spent
one night at Ashland with Mr. and
Mrs. B. C. Forsythe. They went
through Camp White and on up the
Diamond lake highway to' Bend.
