Colleges Told to Train
More Future Officers
' Oregon State College America's
military services are looking to the
colleges to prepare a reservoir of
college trained men suitable to be
come officers three or four years
hence, members of a national com
mittee told representatives of all
west coast colleges at San Francisco
recently.
E. B. Lemon, registrar, who rep
resented O. S. C, reported that he
was impressed by the fact that the
military leaders stated frankly that
it is the obligation of the colleges
and universities to keep qualified
men enrolled in the regular courses.
The conference was called by the
newly organized national joint ar
my, navy, and marine corps college
procurement committee. This board
has been given the reponsibllity of
coordinating and directing the var
ious programs which combine enlist
ment in the army or navy reserve
corps with opportunity to continue
college work to graduation.
Members of the board told the
college representatives that the mil
itary services are well provided with
officer material for the present, but
that it is essential that most officers
for the future be college-trained
men. They pointed out that these
reserve enlistments are not a means
of escaping military service but of
preparing for more important ser
vice after students graduate, unless
the war ends before then.
Tne board has set up quotas for
each college and each class, which
for Oregon State provide opportun
ity for approximately 925 for the
army reserve and the same number
for the navy. These include the var
ious branches of the two services,
such as the air forces, marines, and
coast guard. After this year quotas
will be provided only for the fresh
man class, hence it is essential that
former students who are interested
prepare to take advantage of the
program at once, says Lemon.
Freshman students and others be
low 20 years of age, and therefore
not subject for call under selective
service, will, for. the most part, not
enrdll until they register in college
this fall. Age limits for the navy
V-l program have been raised to
include all between 17 and 25, in
clusive. BIFF AND BANG
Cheese sandwiches appeared to be
doomed a year ago because it was
doubtful whether we would have
enough cheese to go round for our
allies and for lavish home use. But
now there's plenty of cheese for
American tables as well as for our
lend-lease needs. That makes it an
opportune time to take advantage
of the abundance of cheese because
it's a nourishing food at low cost.
The OPA consumer division de
clares that the housewife who buys
food when it is plentiful rather than
using foods limited in supply is help
ing the war .effort. So start plan
ning menus that call for cheese and
more cheese.
