CARE OF PASTURE
MEANS MORE MILK
TO HELP WIN WAR
Use of supplemental irrigation
where that is available, and plant
ing of late summer crops such as
sudan grass elsewhere are empha
sized as important steps in insuring
continuous summer pasture as a
means of keeping up a heavy milk
flow this year, according to offi
cials of the state extension and soil
conservation services.
While the abundant spring rain
fall has insured good early summer
pastures, normal Oregon weather
conditions for the remainder of the
year will mean dry pastures late in
the summer unless advance provis
ion is made.
Every extra milk can filled this
year means that much more vital
food to be shared with the people of
the United Nations, it is emphasized
by county and state USDA war
boards.
Some of the measures that farmers
throughout the state have reported
in the past as valuable aids in sus
taining summer milk production in
clude the following:
Clipping pastures with surplus
growth for silage or hay and to let
the grass recover for later grazing,
doing the mowing early because of
the farm labor shortage.
Clipping weeds on all established
pastures, and harrowing to spread
droppings, thus making more graz
ing available.
Irrigating, if possible, having
equipment in shape before the pas
ture begins to dry up. Start irri
gation before the pasture seems to
need it, otherwise it will probably
be too late to do the most good.
Providing a supplemental feed
supply, such as sudan grass or grain
and vetch.
Making full use of sweet clover
and alfalfa and grass, even if it is
necessary to fence and to haul wa
ter. Rotating grazing between pas
tures, avoiding over-grazing, having
good stockwater available and fol
lowing other practices that give bet
ter pasture return and keep up the
soil protecting grass or legume cov
er. Devise Plan to Speed
Seed Crop Shipment
To expedite movement of Oregon's
record legume seed crop to the sou
thern states, and to relieve conges
tion in warehouses, the state AAA
office has announced a plan for
shipping seed purchased by Com
modity Credit on purity test alone,
without waiting for results of the
official germination test.
Purity tests can be obtained with
in a few days, while at least two
weeks is the time required to com
plete a germination test, AAA of
ficials point out.
Farmers whose seed is shipped
under this plan will be paid 80 per
cent of the price for the top ger
mination of the grade as indicated
by the official purity test. Addi
tional amounts due will be paid as
soon as the official germination test
is received.
