Sncll Thanks Friends,
Reasserts Promises
Earl Snell, republican nominee for
governor, expressing appreciation
for the confidence extended him by
the voters of the state, issued the
following statement early Saturday
morning after early returns indi
cated a substantial lead over his
opponent, Governor Sprague.
"I am most appreciative and pro
foundly grateful for the splendid ex
pression of confidence accorded me
by the citizens of my native state.
I am not unmindful of the great
responsibilities and obligations that
accompany this vote of confidence.
"These are trying times. They are
times that try men's souls. America
will rise to the occasion as she has
met every emergency of the past.
Oregon will be marching in the front
ranks!
"During this campaign I made cer
tain pledges to the people of Oregon.
They were made with all the sin
cerity that I possess. I am deeply
sensitive to those obligations, not
only to the republican party which
I am honored to represent, but ob
ligations to all the citizens of this
great commonwealth.
"Oregon has been fortunate in the
type and character of the men who
have served as chief executives of
our great state. Governor Charles
A. Sprague, our present governor,
has served with credit and distinc
tion. He was called from private
life to serve our state during one
of the most trying times in our his
tory. His conscientious service will
long be remembered.
"In conclusion, I wish to extend
my sincere appreciation to the many
friends and supporters who have
made my nomination possible. Their
sincere friendship and steadfast loy
alty will never be forgotten.
"The press and radio have been
most courteous and kind.
"May I conclude with this solemn
pledge: That if I am chosen as gov
ernor of Oregon in November, it
will be my sincere and earnest pur
pose to serve my native state in a
manner that will reflect credit and
honor. To that end I pledge the ut- -most
of my talents, ability and ca
pacity." New KOAC Trasmitter
Tested; Full Use Near
Corvallis The new KOAC 5000
watt transmitter has been put thru
its preliminary 10-day equipment
test with satisfactory results, reports
F. O. McMillan, supervising engineer
of the station and head of the el
ectrical engineering department at
O. s. c.
The next step will be the "proof
of performance tests" which will
involve approximately 30 days of
operation of the new equipment in
daytime only. This is expected to
start at least by June 1, and will
make the broadcasting of the com
mencement exercises at 0. S. C. and
the baccalaureate service at the Un
iversity of Oregon over the new and
powerful equipment possible.
During that period the big direc
tional antenna system, designed to
increase the signals to the north,
south, and east, and suppress them
in the direction of Tongue Point
naval station, will be given its final
adjustment. Although preliminary
tests were all made after midnight,
numerous encouraging reports of re
ception were received from this and
other states, McMillan said.

NEWS OF FIGHT
ON INFLATION
TO REACH WIDELY
Control of rising prices is of vital
interest to every man, woman, and
child whether livelihood comes from
farm, factory, or industry, according
to those now engaged in enlisting
public support of the national pro
gram against inflation.
Here , in Oregon, as in all other
states, the state college extension
service has been assigned the task
of carrying information on the pro
gram to every rural and farm family
in the state. Ways of doing this were
considered in a four-state confer
ence of extension officials and OPA
representatives in Spokane.
"Only through widespread under
standing can a program involving
voluntary action of all citizens be
carried out," said William A. Scho
enfeld, dean and director of agri- ,
culture, following the conference.
"As an educational agency the ex
tension service has been requested
to reach every rural family with
information on the program aimed
at preventing runaway prices and
inflation. Control of inflation is es
sential in winning the war, and in
resuming normal life in the peace
which follows."
The national program contemplates
fair treatment of all elements of the
population, even though adjustments
may be needed in addition to steps
already announced.
Runaway prices in the first world
war brought post-war disaster for
farmers even more than other class
es of the population, .federal offi
cials point out. When the price
spree ended in the early twenties,
the index of farm prices dropped
130 points in a single year. Thou
sands of farmers lost their farms
because prices first went too far up
and then too far down.
Here in Oregon more than half
half of the population is classified
as rural in the 1940 census. Under
plans being worked out by the ex
tension service, it is hoped to reach
every rural family during the month
' of June with information on its part
in the price control program. The
extension service will work with
farm and rural organizations, OPA
representatives, and other agencies
of the federal government in carry
ing out the informational program.
