    Opposes Pierce
Charles H. Mack, Klamath coun
ty's active young assessor, has an
nounced his candidacy for the dem
ocratic nomination for congress from
the second Oregon district on a plat
form calling for congressional ac
tion for war production.
Aged 34, energetic and with a
record of nearly eight years of pub
lic service already behind him, Mack
promises a fighting campaign for
the nomination, for which Congress
man Walter Pierce, the incumbent,
has also filed.
The new candidate was born and
reared on a farm in Klamath coun
ty, received his schooling in that
county and at Oregon State college
where he graduated in banking and
finance. He staged a successful po
litical campaign in 1934, after sev
eral years of working on the farm
and on the editorial staff of the
Klamath News and Evening Herald.
After four years as county assessor,
he was reelected without opposition
on either ticket. He has announced
that he will not seek reelection in
order to run for congress.
Mack served as first president of
the Oregon State Junior chamber
of commerce. In 1941 he was presi
dent of the state assessor's associa
tion; he is now state chairman of
the National Association of Assess
ing officers and legislative repre
sentative for the state association.

Pierce Declares
In making his declaration of can
didacy for re-election to congress
from the second district, Walter M.
Pierce states:
I offer my candidacy to the peo
ple of the second district so they
may have the opportunity to keep
in Congress a representative in a
position of influence and strength,
during the days ahead when deci
sions will be vitally important to
every citizen.
I enter the primaries of the Demo
cratic party, standing on my voting
record, prompt attention given offi
cial business, and my high-ranking
position, won by long service, on the
agriculture committee where I am
chairman of the sub-committee
which handles wheat and forest leg
islation. I feel sure of strength for
the task to which I wholly dedicate
myself, in a spirit of service and
devotion. I shall, as always, owe al
legiance solely to my conscience, my
country, and my constituents. I
know Oregon and understand our
problems.
My record, during these past dif
ficult years of depression and war
threat, is well known, as my views
have been set forth in numerous
speeches, printed at my own ex
pense, and distributed in order to
keep my constituents fully informed.
My influence and my votes have
been for full preparedness so that
our country would not be left open
to the enemy and lives risked be
cause of lack of training and equip
ment. I have fought those who
would yield and compromise, know
ing full well that a weak, divided
nation would be easy prey.
I shall continue to strive for na
tional strength and unity, demand
ing "all-out," universal sacrifice in
order to bring swift victory. There
is but one subject before us now
winning the war rapidly and decis
ively. My slogan is "Always voted pre
paredness. Let's win, backing our
soldiers, forgetting profits, privil
eges, politics."
