OSC Committee to
Organize Help in
Farm Repair Plan
A committee to mobilize the ef
forts of the Oregon State college
agricultural staff behind the cur
rent national campaign to insure ad
equate machinery for producing and
harvesting next year's crops has
been appointed by William A. Scho
enfeld, dean and director of agri
culture. The committee will help
carry on the program inaugurated
in this state by the United States
agricultural defense board aimed at
bringing about early repair of all
present machinery on farms, and
immediate ordering of essential new
equipment.
Named on the special committee
are F. E. Price, agricultural engi
neer in the experiment station, chair
man; W. L. Teutsch, assistant direc
tor of extension, and E. R. Jackman,
extension farm crops specialist. All
county agents will be enlisted in the
state-wide program.
The most acute farm machinery
problem in Oregon is to obtain ade
quate equipment to handle the 50
per cent expansion in acreage of
winter legume seed, according to
Dean Schoenfeld. Tentative plans
have been made for a series of
county-wide educational meetings
at which seed harvesting methods
will be discussed and the machinery
situation in the various localities will
be surveyed. Oregon farm machin
ery dealers and distributors will be
invited to cooperate in these meet
ings, which will deal with the most
efficient operation of seed-harvesting
machinery, as well as how to ob
tain' the necessary equipment.
Early repair of all machinery now
on farms will be urged throughout
the state to make sure that neces
sary parts can be ordered in plenty
of time. Extension men believe that
Oregon farmers generally have had
such long experience with handling
and repairing machinery that they
are more skilled than the average
throughout the country, hence will
not need actual training schools on
this work. The principal task, it is
believed, will be to bring about an
immeiate inventory of repair needs,
with orders placed at once.
Closely allied to this is the cur
rent drive to have farmers gather
and sell all scrap iron available.
Usable parts and iron suitable for
further repair work are to be held
on farms, however.

Extension Plans
Center on Main
Defense Efforts
"The work of the federal coop
erative extension service is itself
being conducted under a 'priorities
system' these days," said W. L.
Teutsch, assistant director of exten
sion at Oregon State college, upon
his return from the recent meeting
of the Land Grant College associa
tion in Chicago. "First on the prior
ities list is cooperation in the various
national defense efforts, and second
is planning for the post-war adjust
ments." Teutsch pointed out that extension
service work in relation to national
defense includes cooperation with
the U. S. agricultural defense boards
in increasing food for defense, fur
thering the national campaign for
better nutrition, cooperating with
other agences in such things as ma
chinery repair and collection of scrap
iron, and in a program for rural
youth.
The current youth program, in
volving 4-H clubs, is emphasizing
all of the previously mentioned ac
tivities, plus emphasis on expansion
of farm gardens and on the training
of club members in the ideals and
methods of the democratic way of
lire.
Planning for the post-war period
will be carried on in Oregon as in
the past through the active work of
county land use and agricultural
program planning committees. Al
ready some preliminary work of this
nature was carried on last spring
when a report was formulated on
adjusting Oregon agriculture to meet
the impacts of war and national de
fense, Teutsch continued.
This pattern is now being follow
ed more or less throughout the coun
try, according to reports made at the
land grant association meeting. At
those meetings questions of national
defense and post-war planning oc
cupied the entire program, said
Teutsch.
Secretary of Agriculture Wiekard
has recently issued a call to all
USDA agencies to assist immediate
ly in this post-war planning aimed
at averting another agricultural de
pression such as hit the industry in
the early twenties. Planning for this
kind of future is a part of the de
fense effort itself, according to Sec
retary Wiekard.
