Mrs. Henry Schwarz' birthday
was honored Sunday with a family
dinner at her-home. Present were
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Shurte, Ray and
Mary Lou, of Inglewood, Cal.; Mr.
and Mrs. Billy Schwarz and son
Billy of The Dalles and Mr. and Mrs.
Leonard Schwarz and Len Ray of
this city, besides Mr. and Mrs.
Schwarz.
Frank E. Parker returned home
the end of the week from Portland
where he was confined in a hospital
for 24 days and underwent an oper
ation. Good recovery is being made
but Mr. Parker reports advice of the
physician is against any heavy work
for three or four months.
Bill Barratt returned home Sun
day from Chicago where he went
with a shipment of lambs, and ex
pected to go on to Corvallis this
week in time for opening of the fall
term at 0. S. C. where he is a stu
dent Adolph Majeske, in the city Tu-.
esday from the north Lexington
farm, reported a field of recently!
sown rye and barley to now have '
the appearance of a lawn. He plant-
ed the grain for pasture, and he will
have plenty, says he.
Arnold Sharp visited old-time
Sherman county friends the end of
the week while taking in the Sher-
man county fair. Heppner s popu-'
lar baker reports a good show and
an enjoyable visit. J
John Holton is enjoying a visit
this week from a brother who re-'
sides in New York and who he had!
not seen for 30 years. The visiting
rbother is a retired New York bus
iness man.
Mr. and Mrs. James Cowins had
as their houseguests Saturday, Sgt.
James Davis and wife, Walter Mc
Neill and wife and Sgt. Wallace
Livingston all from the Pendleton
air base.
Mrs. Olaf Bergstrom returned to
her home in Eight Mile Tuesday
after being' confined at Heppner
,n hospital for several weeks receiving
treatment for a broken hip.
Anouncement has been made here
of the marriage of Miss Edna Jones,
formerly of this city, to Jesse Kish
of Portland. The newlyweds will
make their home in Portland.
Miss Virginia Lee, first grade tea
cher was called to La Grande the
first of the week by the death of her
father, who was fatally injured in a
sawmill accident.
Hugh Crawford arrived Sunday
night from Berkeley, Cal., where
he spent the summer, to visit until
today with mother. Mrs. Lera Craw
ford and brother Calvin. He is leav
ing today for Eugene where he will
enter the University of Oregon as
a freshman His brother John, who
also spent the summer at Berkeley,
accompanied him as far as Eugene,
but remained there to assist in get
ting a fraternity house ready for
opening of school next week.
Fred Akers said things are look
ing fine over in the Hamilton coun
try where he moved a few months
ago from the Eight Mile district. He
was in the city Tuesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pettijohn of
Toppenish, Wash., visited the end
of the week at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Mark Merrill.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Wells are in
Klamath Falls this week to attend
the annual convention of state as
sessors. Charles Jones suffered an acute
attack of appendicitis Tuesday and
was rushed to St. Anthony's hospital
at Pendleton for treatment.
Will be in Heppner Sept. 23 and
24, last trip this fall. Anyone wish
ing to see me call Lucas Place. Mrs.
H. K. Miller, Spencer Corsetierre.
Linda Taylor is slowly recovering
from injuries sustained three mon
ths ago in an auto accident.
Lois Jones will leave the end of
: the week for Eugene to enter North
! western Christian college.
Heppner Bakery
i Installs Electric Oven
J. A. (Arnold) Sharp, owner of
, Heppner bakery, announces instal
: lation of a new automatic electric
oven for the baking of Morrow coun
ty's favorite bread.
The new oven measuring 4V2 by 9
feet and standing 6 feet high, has
two baking shelves which are ther
mostatically controlled for even
heat. Each shelf has a light which
enables the operator to ascertain
the stage of baking at all times.
Mr. Sharp states that the new
oven will improve the quality of the
bread by slow, even baking and will
compare favorably with any bread
in the country. The oven was or
dered six months ago, but due to
defense orders was delayed in de
livery, arriving the first of the week
and is now in operation. 1
NOTICE OF 1942 BUDGET MEETING
In accordance with the provisions of the "Local Budget Law" (Sections 110-1201 to 110-1215 O. C. L. A., as
amended), notice is hereby given that the Budget Committee of Morrow County, Oregon, has prepared in
compliance with the "Local Budget Law," Budget Estimates for the ensuing fiscal period January 1, 1942 to
une 30, 1942. All persons are hereby notified that on the 14th day of October, 1941, at 10 A. ML, in the County
Court Room in the Court House Building, Heppner, Oregon, the following Budget Estimates for the ensuing
iiscal pcricd ending June 30, 1942, Morrow County, Oregon, may be discussed with the Morrow County Court,
the Levying Board for said Morrow County, Oregon, and any person subject to the proposed tax levy or tax
levies will be heard in favor of or against said proposed tax levy or tax levies or any part thereof.
The estimates of expenditures to be required, the miscellaneous revenues to be received and the taxes on
property to be levied as prepared by the Budget Committee, and adopted September 15, 1941, are as set forth
in the accompanying statements, together with the outstanding indebtedness of Morrow County, Oregon, as at
September 1, 1941.
The original estimate sheets as required by Section 110-1204 O.C.L.A., have been placed on file in the
office of the Morrow County Clerk.
