Accidents Threat
To Defense Program
Emphasizing that a workman kill
ed or injured in a traffic accident
may well be as much a loss to the
nation as the death or injury of a
member of our armed forces, Ea.l
Snell, secretary of state, calls at
tention to President Roosevelt's re
quest for American citizens to en
list in a campaign to prevent traffic
accidents, and urged Oregonians to
hold to the advantage gained in Lne
early part of this year.
"Military authorities emphasize
the fact that in modem warfare, the
man at the front is dependent on
the man in industry, therefore, when
a toolmaker, a shipyard worker, or
any other workman is vitally need

Growers Buy All
With August 30 the deadline for taking out federal crop insurance
on fall-seeded wheat for harvest in 1942, Oregon growers are signing a
record number of policies to protect their Wheat crop from all risks. The
scene above is being enacted many times throughout the state a Triple

Sterility Facts
Revealed in New
0. S. C. Bulletin
All the answers to the problem
of sterility in dairy cows are . still
far from being found, but consider -ale
information on some things
blamed wrongly for sterility, and on
other things that may contribute to
it, is contained in a new experiment
station buUein issued at Oregon
State college, entitled "Reproduct
ive Performance in Dairy Cattle."
Although the bulletin is semi
technical in that it reports on actual
research studies, it is expected to
contribute much to the general un
derstanding of the sterility problem.
It is well illustrated with drawings
of the reproductive organs of dairy
cattle and of the reproduction pro
cess, a number of these drawings be
ing life size.
Studies of the cow families rep
resented in the O. S. C. dairy herd
for the past 25 years have definitely
shown the importance of inherit
ance in good fertility. These and
similar studies indicate that much
of the low fertility in commercial
herds may be traced to poor inher
itance and close breeding practices.
Among factors studied and found
to be either relatively unimportant,
or which so far have mailed to show
a vital relationship to the problem
are vitamin A deficiency, the use
of vitamin E injections, and the use
of hormone injections, although the
last named is still definitely in the
experimental stage.
Many non-specific infections in
both made and female dairy ani
mals were found to impair tro
breeding efficiency, although Trich
imonad infection has not been dem
onstrated in Oregon up to the pre
sent time. Losses through the sale
of dairy animals thought to be ster
ile but which were not have been
found to be rather severe. Between
20 and 25 per cent of dairy cows sold
to Oregon slaughter houses as ster
ile have been found to be pregnant.
The bulletin, which may be had
free, is written by I. R. Jones, R. W.
Daugherty, and J. R. Haag of the
station staff.
nation is very real," Snell declared.
The secretary of state pointed cut
that during the first half of tias
year, traffic deaths in the nation as
a whole were up 17 percent while
in Oregon, deaths were down four
percent. He urged citizens in Ore
gon to accept as their "personal re
sponsibility, the job of avoiding accidents."

Wheat Men Told of
Deadline for '42 Plans
Oregon wheat farmers are being
contacted by county AAA associa
tions to sign winter wheat plans for
their farms prior to the deadline Oc
tober 31.
Every farmer who will plant fall
wheat this year must sign a plan for
his farm if he is to be eligible for
participation in the 1942 farm con
servaton program. By signing the
plan the farmer declares his inten
tion to seed' within his wheat acre
age allotment and also indicates the
number of acres on which he will
have wheat in 1942.
With 1942 marketing quotas al
ready proclaimed and almost sure
to be in effect, county offices are
stressing the importance of seeding
within allotments. Changes in the
wheat program for 1942 provide
that the non-allotment option can
be chosen only by farmers normally
cutting wheat for hay and with an
allotment in excess of 15 acres. Those
with allotments of fewer than 15
acres are exempt from quota re
strictions, however.
The state AAA office also points
out that it will not be possible fori
non-allotment farms to seed up to
their usual acres, as was the case in
1941, without incurring deductions
from parity and conservation pay
ments. NOTICE OF EXECUTRIX SALE
