French Burroughs
Rites Held at lone

The death of French Burroughs,
pioneer farmer of Rhea creek oc
curred at his home Monday noon
after a long illness. Mr. Burroughs
was 84 years of age, and had beer,
a resident of this county since the
early eighties. He was a native cf
Ohio. Besides his widow, he is sur
vived by one son, Glen Burroughs
of Kirksville, Mo. Funeral services
were held Wednesday afternoon at
the Christian church.
Miss Ruth Crawford entered the
hospital at Heppner Monday for an
appendectomy.
Mr. and Mrs. Grady Seay (nee
Nell La Hue) of Los Angeles arriv
ed Saturday and are staying at the
French Burroughs home. Mrs. Seay
is an old time friend of Mrs. Bur
roughs. Mr. and Mrs. Lute Jordan end
daughter Frances of Roseburg a.e
guests at the Laxton McMurray
home. Mr. Jordan is a nephew of
Mrs. French Burroughs and a for
mer resident of lone.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl F. Feldman
left Wednesday morning on a bus
iness trip to Sunnyvale, Cal., to at
tend to some business matters. Thev
were accompanied by Mrs Bert Ma
son. The Feldmans plan to be gone
about two weeks, and on their te
turn anticipate a visit from their
daughter, Mrs., Neil Shuirman rnd
two children of Flint, Mich.

Falls, Idaho, arrived Saturday for o
visit with her brother, A. A. Mc
Cabe and family. Miss McCabe is
a trained nurse and will go from
here to Great Falls, Mont., where

to specialize in anaesthetics.
Erling Thompson has ben ap
pointed clerk of the lone school
board, succeeding Leonard Carlson,
who resigned.
Miss Mary Ball of Yakima is em
ployed on the Delbert Emert ranch.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ilynd, Jr., of
Weston are guests of Mr. Hynd's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hynd of
Cecil.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wright, Mr.
and Mrs. Everett Keithley and chil
dren and Gene Grabil of Baker are
guests of their mother, Mrs. Ida
Grabil.
Mrs. J. H. Bryson suffered a sud-1
den attack of illness Sunday and
was taken to a physician in Hermis
ton for treatment.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Heliker went
to Portland on Saturday.
Guests at the C. F. Feldman home
Saturday were Mr. Feldman's sister-in-law,
Mrs. Agnes Feldman, and
children, Elsie, Florence and Elmer
and Mr. Joe Crickston of Great
Falls, Mont., and Miss Margaret
Feldman of Hamilton, Mont. The
party was on a vacation trip to Los
Angeles.
Friends here have received word
of the birth of a daughter on Aug
ust 1 to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Buch
anan of Adams, former residents of
lone. The baby weighed 6 pounds
and has been named Joyc Carol.
Mrs. Buchanan was formerly Alice
Renoe.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Fortin and
daughter Frances of Umpqua visited
the last of the week with Mr. and
Mrs. Wallace Matthews of Morgan.
Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Palmateer and
family returned Monday from a vis
it with relatives in Estacada. While
there Miss Doris underwent a ton
silectomy. The Palmateers are hav
ing extensive improvements made
on their ranch house, which will
make it fire proof and dust proof.
Miss June Yarnell of Salem arriv
ed Friday and moved into her ap
artment at the Park hotel. She is
j visiting relatives in Bickleton, Wn.,
this week. She is the teacher for
the primary grades here.
There is still one vacancy in the
teaching force for the high school
here.
Mrs. E. G. Sperry and daughters,
Eileen and Charlotte returned Fri
day from Portland where they vis
ited relatives. ..
Mrs. Dean Ekleberry entertained
some young friends last Thursday
at her home near Morgan in honor
of her son, Dickie, who was eight
years old that day. Guests were
Francine and Fayne Ely, Jane See
hafer, Bobby and Mary Ekleberry,
Ida Botts, Gene and Elise Bauern
feind, besides Dickie's sisters, Shir
ley and Cora Louise.
Miss Patty Emert returned to her
home in Hermiston Saturday after
spending the summer here.

Rev. and Mrs. Davis left Sunday
for Bridgeport, Wash. They will re
turn Saturday accompanied by Rev.
and Mrs. Hazelbug who will take
over the pastorate of the Pentecos
tal church here.

and Mrs. George Rand visited rela

North End Fair Plans
Talked at Boardman

North Morrow County fair will be
held in Boardman this year instead
of Irrigon as was first planned. A
community meeting was held at he
grange hall Saturday evening and
the following officers and directors
were elected:: President, Russell
Miller; secretary, Mrs. Minnie Mc
Farland; treasurer, Mrs. Leola Tan--nehill;
directors, Robert Berger,
Ashton Foorst, Mrs. W. A. Baker an i
Mrs. Morrison. Date for the fair will
be announced later.
Mr. and Mrs. John Harvey of
Newton, 111., arrived at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Russell Miller to spend
a couple of weeks. Mr. Harvey and
Mr. Miller are cousins.
Mr. and Mrs. George Corwin and
Mrs. Arthur Allen motored to Port
land Friday. The Corwins attended
the wedding of Mrs. Corwm's bro
ther, Leslie Forden, at the St. Hel
ens hall Saturday and the party at

comber of Spray took her home.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Tannehill and
son Keith motored to The Dalles on
business Tuesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Z. J. Gillespie and
sons Donald and Lynn and Mrs,
Claud Coats were shopping in Pen
dleton Tuesday.
Company Gives 25
More Scholarships
Oregon State College The sec
ond annual group of 25 scholarships
to high school students to enroll in
agriculture at Oregon State college
has been awarded by Sears, Roe
buck and company, according to an
announcement by William A. Scho
enfeld, dean and director of agri
culture. The scholarships of $100
each are offered by the company to
worthy Oregon farm boys of good
character and scholastic attainment
who have demonstrated leadership
ability through participation in 4-H
club, Future Farmer, or other ag
ricultural or community activities.
Final selection of the winners is
made by the school of agriculture
itself on the basis of applications
turned in. The 25 students awarded
scholarships this year come from 19
different counties. The scholarship
plan was started a year ago and
proved so successful that the com
pany has continued it on an annual
basis as part of a nation-wide plan
of encouraging education for rural
leadership.
