Wat-ten burger Home
Hit by Fire, Pine City
By BERNICE WATTENBURGER
The home of Mr. and Mrs. E. B.
Wattenburger caught on fire last
Friday. Mrs. Wattenburger had a
fire in the front room stove and a
high wind caused sparks to catch
the roof on fire. With help of school
children, teachers and neighbors it
was put out by pumping water from
a pitcher pump. The front room
and front bedroom were ruined by
fire and water. The house was cov
ered by insurance. Mr. and Mrs.
Wattenburger want to thank the
school children and neighbors very
much for their help, and also the
three men from Hermiston. who
helped, but whose names are not
known.
Mr. and Mrs. R. E. McGreer left
Sunday for Redmond and Klamath
Falls for a weeks business trip. ,
Mr. and Mrs. Marion Finch and
daughters were Pendleton callers
Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wigglesworth
and family of Echo and Mr. and
Mrs. Floyd Van Orsdall and Miss
Othelia Bronghagen of Pendleton
were Sunday dinner guests with
Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Wattenburger.'
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wattenburger
and son Freddy of Pasco spent Sat
urday night and Sunday with Mr.
and Mrs. A. E. Wattenburger. . .
Mrs. R. L. Brewster, mother of
Mrs. Margaret McGreer, is staying
this week at the McGreer home,
taking care of Shirley McGreer and
Bobby Groundvold. ,
Miss Mary Daly has stopped train-
ing at the St, Anthony's hospital
to soon be the bride of Mr. Bill
Doherty of Alpine.
Miss Katherine O'Brien is on the
sick list this week.
Ray Ayers spent last Thursday
and Friday helping his father build
fence.
Jim Ayers and Jerry Coxen of
Hermiston spent Sunday at the C.
H. Ayers home.
Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Bartholomew
spent last week in Pullman, Wash.
While there Mrs. Bartholomew met
Freddie Hammell who taught school
at Pine City a number of years ago,
and also visited Stella Carlson,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter
Carlson. Mrs. Peter Carlson is in a
hospital in Portland. She had a
stroke. Her brother Frank is mar
ried and lives at Astoria.

Army Remount Wants
Horses From Owners
Additional information from the
state department of agriculture on
the purchase of horses by the Army
Remount service received this week
lists Thursday, May 8, as the re
ceiving date for places located in
this vicinity. Named are Long Creek
at 8 a. m., Ukiah at 10 a. m., and
Penleton at Round-Up grounds at
1 p. m. on that date. In the list
of receiving stations from which
release was given last week, The
Dalles was the closest station given.
Breeders will be given- preference
over dealers in the purchases of
horses for defense needs, says the
release. All horses must meet spe
cifications: gentleness; good flesh
I and good health; good movers at
walk, trot and gallop; some breed
ing, either good rugged thorough
breds or well made half-breds.
Horses bought must be geldings,
4 to 8 years old; 15 to 16 hands in
height; 975 to 1,150 pounds; and
bay, brown, black or chestnut in
color. Prices range from $150 to
$175. Owners are advised not to
bring mares, as only very outstand
ing mares with registration papers
will be considered.

GON. To all owners of lands lying with
in the proposed Heppner Soil Con
servation District, comprising the
territory described as follows:
Beginning at the southwest
corner of Section 31, Township
3 South, Range 24 East; thence
north along Township lines to
the northwest corner of Section
6, Township 1 South, Range 24
East; thence east along town
ship lines to the northeast cor
ner of Section 1, Township 1
South, Range 30 Ea3t; thence
south along township lines to the
southeast corner of Section 25,
Township 4 South, Range 30
East; thence westerly to and
along the boundary of the Uma
tilla National Forest to the
Morrow-Wheeler County line;
thence northerly along the Mor

Notice is hereby given that on
the 10th day of May, 1941, between
the hours of 1:00 P. M. and 6:00 P.
M., a referendum will be held in the
said territory upon the proposition
of the creation of the Heppner Soil
Conservation District as a govern
mental subdivision and a public
body, corporate and politic, under
the provisions of the Soil Conserva
tion Districts Law of this State.
Every person, firm and corpora
tion, State, County, or Municipality,
being the record owners of or hold
ing under contract of purchase ten
acres or more of lands lying within
the said territory are eligible to vote
and only such are eligible to vote.
Voting divisions and polling places
for the referendum are as follows:
Division No. 1. Polling' place lo
cated at Heppner, Morrow County,
in the Circuit Court Room of the
Court House.
Division No. 2. Polling place lo
cated at Lena, Morrow County, in
the School House.
Division No. 3. Polling place lo
cated at Lexington, Morrow County,
in Leach Hall.
Division No. 4. Polling place lo
cated at lone, Morrow County, in
the Legion Hall.
Division No. 5. Polling place lo
cated at Rhea Creek, Morrow Coun
ty, in the Grange Hall.
Eligible voters residing within the
proposed district shall cast their bal
lots at the polling place nearest to
their residence. Eligible voters not
residing within the proposed district
shall cast their ballots at the poling
place nearest their land, or the great
er part thereof. Eligible voters who
will be absent from their division on
the day of the referendum may ap
ply in person or in writing to Fred
Mankin, Polling Superintendent, at
lone, for absentee ballots. Each ap
plicant for an absentee ballot shall
state his name, residence, location
and acreage of land owned.
