Avenues by which electricity can be dispatched instantly to any of
the Pacific Northwest's defense production areas are shown on this
"road map" of transmission lines, compiled by engineers of Pacific
Power & Light and Northwestern Electric companies.
Largely developed by the private utility companies of the five
states, this network covers an area five times greater than that
served by the noted British "grid" system. Extensive power com
pany construction programs since 1918 have vastly strengthened
the network and made electricity the Northwest's most mobile
defense resource, according to Paul B. McKee, president of the
Pacific Power & Light Company.
Generating plants of the region have 2,250,000 kilowatts of capac
ity, with an additional 400,000 kilowatts under construction.
Nearing completion is the newest strategic link in the network,
a 260-mile line which will interconnect the important copper, zinc
and lead producing areas of northern Idaho and Montana with the
mining and smelting centers of Utah. When this line goes into service
it will be possible to shift power back and forth as needed all along
the way from the seacoast to Salt Lake City.
' Importance of these system interconnections developed by the
electric industry is that they insure a continuous and adequate
supply of electricity everywhere on the network.
Wheat Countries
All in Same Boat
As to Surpluses
American wheat growers are by
no means alone in their efforts to
control the world wheat surplus in
producing exporting countries, ac
cording to Will Steen, chairman of
the state AAA committee in Ore
gon, who has recently received word
of step being taken in Canada, Ar
gentina and Australia.
American wheat growers will no
fouHt. Ho faced with the problem of
deciding on the adoption of wheat
mai-Wincr ouotas. says Steen. A
-tentative date for the election has
been set for May 31. If, as expected,
Ko mwsnpetive wheat supplies by
Ufav 15 are above the limit set in
-the law of 1938, a marketing quota
election must be held." If the quota
, onnwurAsl Viv growers, the gov-
eminent loans will continue, which
constitutes one of America's chief
mofhrwla nf maintaining wheat grow
ers' incomes while exercising a limit
on production.
TVio Artntma and Canadian gov
mena have been protecting their
Kv offering to buy their
wheat outright, but this has led to
difficulties. Argentine farmers are
assured about 55 cents a bushel ana
naAian farmers of about 50 cents.
Both governments say now they
cannot continue to buy unlimited
o,niintj of wheat unless foreign
markets re-open. Canadian growers
still have much of last year's crop
piled out under temporary shelters
because supplies far exceed storage
capacity of the country.
Australia guarantees wheat far
mers a twice of about 56 cents a
bushel on an annual crop of not
more than 140 million bushels. In
return for this guarantee the grow
ers must agree to market their wheat
through the government and carry
out certain practices designed to
reduce wheat acreage.
In Argentina it is estimated that
nearlv 200 million bushels of wheat
will be available for export in 1941.
Canada will have more than 700
million bushels. Both these amounts
are considerably larger than supplies
on hand a year ago. Because of
drouth Australia does not have
PYDort suDolies. but even so
these cannot move freely through
military blockades.
