Although the plays failed to ar
rive in time for the members of the
FFA to memorize their parts, and
had to be omitted, an interesting
program was presented during the
lecture hour to a large audience at
the Willows grange meeting Satur
day evening. Numbers included
music by Future Farmers band; vo
cal solo with guitar, Donald Heli-
ker, "Little Green Valley"; speech,!
"Why I Want to be an American;
Farmer," Van Rietmann; speech
"Methods of Selecting Alfalfa Hay,"
Snell Weatherford; vocal duet, gui
tar and banjo accompaniment, Roy
and Frank Johnson, "Silver Haired
Daddy of Mine," "The Yellow Rose
of Texas." Judging speeches were
Marjorie Baker, Gladys Ely and
Marjorie Gordon. The decision went
to Van Rietmann who will represent
the Arlington chapter in the Future
Farmers contest in Heppner later in
the month.
The program given last Saturday
night was a requirement m their
work and speaks very well for their
various activities.
At the end of the evening the
boys surprised the membership by
turning their share of the door re
ceipts back to the grange. The
grange thanks you, boys.
On Sunday about 35 persons en
joyed the pot-luck dinner after

Washington Revealed
as Conservationist
If George Washington were alive
today, he probably would be one of
the active leaders in the present re
vived interet in soil conservation
and erosion control, say those who
have been studying his writings on
agricultural matters.
J. H. Christ, regional head of the
Soil Conservation service in the Pa
cific northwest, points out in con
nection with the observance of
Washington's birthday that this
country's first president was an act
ive and enthusiastic farmer who
once said that "I know of no pursuit
in which more real important serv
ices can be rendered to any country
than by improving its agriculture...

Agricultural writings of George!
Washington, collected and edited by
W. E. Brook, reveal that Washington
was probably the first planter in
Virginia to change from the wasteful
soil depleting one -crop system. Vir
ginians in his day grew tobacco year
after year, sometimes following it
with Indian corn. At Mt. Vernon
tobacco was once the main crop, but
it gradually decreased in importance
giving place to wheat and other
grains as well as to potatoes, carrots,
flax and hemp grown for home use.
If Washington were here today,
Christ believes he would, as a lover
of land, be a leader in an aroused
public consciousness that has in the
past few years swung the pendulum
from exploitation to conservation
all across the country from his na
tive Virginia to the Pacific northwest.
