New lone Church
By-Laws Adopted
By MRS. ELMER GRIFFITH
At the Congregational meeting at
the church on Sunday the by-laws
for a cooperative church were ac
cepted. These by-laws will be read
again next Sunday. At noon next
Sunday there will be a pot luck
dinner in the parlors of the Con
gregational church to which every
one is invited. Following this a Dus
tiness meeting will be held, and the
election of of church officers under
the by-laws.
Mrs. ,G. C. Henderson departed
Sunday for her home in Pullman,
Wash., after a weeks' visit with
her daughter, Mrs. E. M. Baker.
Fifty persons were present at the
bridal hower given for Bernice Ring
Friday afternoon. The Valentine
motif was used both for decorations
and refreshments. On the table a
little bride and groom were shel
tered beneath an umbrlla, from
which rain (white streamers) drip
ped. Mrs. P. C. Peterson and Mrs.
Harry Yarnell spent Tuesday after
noon at Morgan with Mrs. J. W.
Schleevoight.
The Union Aid society held an
all-day quilting at the church last
Thursday with a pot luck dinner
at noon.
Considerable excitement was caus
ed when the fire bell rang Saturday
afternoon. The alarm was caused by
the burning out of Harry Yarnell's
flue, which was fortunately extin
guished without damage.
Students and faculty of the high
school enjoyed a Valentine party at
the gym Friday night. Games were
played and refreshments served in
the dining room
Six tables of bridge were in play
at the E. R. Lundell home Friday
evening when Mr. Lundell, assisted
by Mrs. E. J. Blake and Mrs. Clyde
Denney, entertained the Women's
Topic club. Those present were Mr.
and Mrs. Cleo Drake, Mr. and Mrs.
Harry Yarnell, Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Lundell, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Blake,
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Rietmann, Mr.
and Mrs. Omar Rietmann, Mrs. C.
W. Swanson, Mrs. M. E. Cotter, Mr.
and Mrs. J. E. Swanson, Richard
Lundell; Mildred Lundell, Mr. and
Mrs. Dorr Mason, and Mrs. Hugh
Smith. Prizes were won by Mrs.
Drake, Mrs. Frank Lundell, Mr. Yar
nell and Mr. Blake. The first meet
ing in March will be at Mrs. Erling
Thompson's house.
The O. E. S. Social club will meet
Wednesday at the Masonic hall to
discuss plans for a home talent play.
Mrs. D. R. Long is hostess.
Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Lundell and
son, Norton Lundell of Heppner,
went to Walla Walla Monday. The
men attended to business matters,
and Mrs. Lundell visited her broth
er, Lester Baker.
Friendship club of Cecil met
Thursday at the home of Mrs. Her
bert Hynd. It was decided that the
club would take up Red Cross work.
The young son of Mr. and Mrs.
O. G. Haguewood who has had in
fantile paralysis, is now able to sit
up for a short period of time each
day.
There will be church services at
the Lutheran church in Gooseberry
next Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Roundy (Em
erald Padberg) of Condon are the
parents of a daughter, born Mon
day. Mrs. J. H. Bryson, aunt of
Mrs. Roundy, has gone to Condon
to be with her niece.
Denward Bergevin has entered
training as an army air pilot, and
is located at Santa Maria, Cal.
Mrs. Erling Thompson presented
a Valentine musical at her home
Saturday afternoon. Guests present
were Mrs. D. T. Smith and Barbara,
Mrs. Victor Rietmann and Ruby
Ann, Mrs. Frank Lundell and Billy
and Norma Lou, Mrs. Ray Barnett
and David and Mary, Mrs. H. V.
Smouse and Shirley, Mrs. Carl Al
lyn and Maxine, Mrs. D. R. Long
and Dorothy, Mrs. Fred Nichoson
and Alice and June Griffith. The
program follows: "Aims in Teach
ing," Mrs. Thompson; "Glad and
Gay," Barbara Smith; "Let's Go
Fishing," Ruby Ann Rietmann; "At
the Officers' Ball," Billy Lundell;
"Band is Playing Dixie," Mary Lou
Haguewood; "Guitar Waltz," Norma
Lou Lundell; "Chasing," David Bar
nett; "For He's a Jolly Good Fel
low," Shirley Smouse; "Bells of St.
Mary's," Maxine Allyn; :"Dream of
a Shepherdess," Mary Barnett, and
"Volga Boatman," Dorothy Farrens.
After the program the guests en
joyed a Valentine box, peanut hunt
and other games, after which re
freshments were served. .
Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Stefani spent
the week end in Canby.
Roy Lindstrom attended to busi
ness and visited friends in Portland
and Valley points over the week
end. He returned Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. James Lindsay mov
ed this week from Willow creek to
the Berry ranch north of lone. Mr.
and Mrs. Seehafer have moved to
the ranch vacated by Mr. Lindsay.
Robert Perry has returned to his
school in Arlington after spending
several days with his father at Mor
gan. Garland Swanson and John Eu
banks made a trip to Cheney, Wash.,
Friday.
Mr. and Mrs. Milton Morgan, Jr.,
and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lundell
were business visitors in Walla Wal
la Monday.
Fred W. Griffith spent Sunday
night here, the guest of his mother,
Mrs. P. J. Linn. Mr. Griffith, who
is financial secretary of the engin
eers at the Labor Temple in Port
land, was in Pendleton to attend a
meeting of the Building Trades
council, and drove over here to
visit his mother.
Mrs. Elmer Griffith visited with
her" daughter Katherine at Monu
ment and shopped in Portland this
week end.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl F. Feldman ar
rived home Monday from Sunny
vale, Cal, where they spent the winter.
Mrs. Omar Rietmann entertained
friends at bridge Thursday evening.
Guests were Mesdame Ella David
son, Paul O'Meara, Ida Fletcher, and
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Yarnell and
Alton.
Charles Conner is suffering an
attack of influenza.
