Johnson added.
Speaking for the county court,
Johnson said much time had been
expended in attempting to gain funds
for these needed road improvements
and that he and the commissioners
had at last been successful in ob
taining the allotments.
The court appreciates the coopera
tion of the people regarding the
roads, Judge Johnson stated, and
anytime anyone has any suggestions,
that are within reason, the county
court will try to carry them out.
SERVICES AT GOOSEBERRY
Services will be held Sunday, De
cember 29, at 10:30 a. m. at the Lu
theran church in Gooseberry. The
evening service, starting at 7:30, will
include a Christmas program and
tree. Harry W. Lundblad of Gresh
am will conduct the services.

LOCAL NEWS
Dickie Kinne, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Ray Kinne, and Bobby Van Schoiack,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Cleve Van
Schoiack, were awarded their ten
derfoot badges in Boy Scout work
on December 16th. Mr. O. E. Hoover
of Walla Walla, Blue Mountain
Council Boy Scout executive, was in
at that time, and held a short con
ference with the scout committee
here, making the awards at that
meeting.
W. H. French passed through
Heppner Tuesday on his way home
to the Hardman ranch after a visit
to the coast. While there he saw the
ship that wrecked off the coast at
Barview near Tillamook. Mr. French
spent 12 days at Ritter before going
to the coast. He reported that the
wind has knocked out the telephone
line to Hardman.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Alfred arrived
in Heppner the first of the week for
a short visit. Mr. Alfred took leave
of his duties last fall as district at
torney for service in the army at
Camp Murray. Mrs. Alfred has been
assisting in public welfare work at
Oregon City. They expected to spend

the Christmas holidays at Silverton.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Becket are

er, Lt. Col. John Becket of the U.
3. Marines. The Becket's plan to
take in the Stanford-Nebraska Rose
Bowl game while in California.
Dr. A. D. McMurdo reported that
the present flu epidemic had evident
ly reached its peak and was sub
siding. He said the epidemic was
quite general, and although no real
serious cases had been reported, the
flu has been quite persistent. - '
Edna Crowe, an exchange student
from Korea who is attending the U.
of O., is visiting at the Claud Huston

holidays.
Marriage licenses were issued last
week at the county clerk's office to
Rachel Forsythe and Ed Dick, Jr.,
both of Heppner, and Edna Stephens,
Heppner, and Clarence Schoenerger,
