Opening License Sale !
for Sportsmen on 15th
With Oregon's 1940 big game sea
son history, the curtain falling on
migratory bird season in this state,
and fishing confined largely to the
coastal streams, attention of the Or
egon State Game commission is now
centered in distribution of 1941
hunting and fishing licenses.
Preparations for supplying more
than 200,000 sportsmen with the new
licenses has been under way for
some little time. The sale opens
on December 15 in both the commis
sion's Portland office and at 600
agencies scattered throughout the
state.
Opening of the sale in the middle
of the month was made because of
the heavy demand on the part of
persons who desire to purchase li
censes and use them as Christmas
gifts.
Warning is issued that persons
mailing money for veterans and pio
neer licenses should first obtain ap
plication blanks from the license
agencies, filling them out with re
port of the 1940 kill and other in
formation, before mailing them to
Portland. They will avoid delay in
return of the licenses.
EXTENDS APPRECIATION
Mrs. Ralph I. Thompson extends
appreciation of the fine treatment
accorded her by Morrow county
folks during her term as president
of Oregon State Wool Growers auxiliary;-
Special mention is given to
Mrs. W. O. Bayless for her excel
lent work as chairman of the ways
and means committee, and to Mrs.
Harold Cohn, who served so faith
fully as secretary.
Mrs. Florence Strange of Arling
ton was a recent visitor at the M.
J. Devin home, returning to her
home last week end after a week's
visit. She is a sister of Mrs. Devin.
Among the Pioneers
IS SHE OLDEST RESIDENT?
Mrs. Cora Burroughs of Rhea
creek came to her father's home
stead in what is now Morrow coun
ty in 1870. She was then 7 years old,
having" been born in the Willamette
valley. She attended the first school
in Heppner, a one-room school with
one teacher. She has resided, in the
county continuously since for a
record of 70 years. The countryside
was largely waving bunchgrass
when she arrived. Can anyone beat
that for length of residence?
WAS AMONG FIRST BORN
Singularly enough, little thought
was given to the fact that a member
of the Gazette Times firm, Mrs. Cora
Crawford, might be an eligible can
didate when editorial conjecture
as to who might be the oldest per
son now living in Morrow county
to have been born within its con
fines, was made two weeks ago. Cora
Spencer was born May 28, 1872, on
the farm on Rhea creek now op
erated by Grant Olden. Her resi
dence has been made continuously
in the county since.
