Page Eight Heppner Gazette Times, Heppner, Oregon Thursday, December 12, 1940 Wool Growers To Keep Last Year's Officers In 1941 Lakeview Oregon woolgrowers concluded one of their most suc cessful annuol conventions here last week with the reelection of last year's officers and the adoption of a series of resolutions on various top ics vital to the sheep industry. Mac Hoke, Pendleton, will contin ue as president; Wayne Stewart, John Day, as vice-president, and Walter Holt, Pendleton, as secretary-treasurer. One new feature that attracted much interest this year was a round table or panel discussion near the end of the session, on the subject of "War and Its Effect Upon the Wool Market." E. L. Potter, head of the agricultural economics de partment at Oregon State college, led this, with President Hoke, R. A. Ward, head of the Pacific Wool Growers cooperative; J. T. Alexan der, a Portland woolen goods manu facturer, and J. A. Gebson, a private buyer, all participating. Among the facts brought out in this discussion was that the gov ernment estimates that it will take an average of 135 pounds of grease wool to outfit one soldier in the present preparedness drive. Already the government has purchased 160, 000,000 pounds of wool to care for the needs of the first million re- ' emits. The British wool brought in from Australia to be held in this country for safe keeping and possible later purchase, was discussed with gen eral agreement that it has been sur rounded by enough safeguards so that it should not seriously affect American prices, though it may serve to keep them from going ex cessively high. Some trouble after the present defense effort was fore seen for the wool producer. This type of program number was well received by the members of the association who gathered near the platform and took part in the discussion by directing many ques tions to the members of the "panel." Dr. J. P. Stewart, Eye-Sight Spe cialist of Pendelton, Oregon, will be at the HEPPNER HOTEL on WED NESDAY, DECEMBER 18th. The best medium for selling or trading is a G-T want ad.
