inursuay, lMovemper Z8, Nyberg Wins Top I Honors in State Corn Competition A young man who spent seven years growing corn as a 4-H club project emerged with the sweep stakes trophy at the fourth annual Oregon State Corn show held in Cor vallis. Clayton Nyberg, 22, of Tualitan, exhibited 20 ears of hybrid corn of Wisconsin variety, which placed first in his district, won the championship of the hybrid class, and then went on to take sweepstakes over all class es. His entry had been selected from an acre of corn which yielded 112 bushels as measured by a disinterest ed party, although the yield did not figure in the award won. This year's show was probably more widely attended than any yet held, and the quality of corn was un usually high, according to Oregon State college representatives - who staged the show and did the judging. The show was sponsored jointly by Oregon farm organizations, Portland business interests, the state depart ment of education, and Oregon State college. The hybrid corn growing contest, in which yield and cost of produc tion are considered, and in which three acres are a minimum require ment, was won this year by F. S. Green of Stanfield, with a yield of 125.69 buhels per acre, produced at a cost of only 19.5 per bushel. L. 0. Gorman of Crabtree won in western Oregon with a yield of 67.16 bushels per acre, at a cost of 26.8 cents per bushel. C. A. Marsh of Hillsboro retained his title in the state corn shucking contest by shucking 211.9 pounds net in 19 minutes. Marsh, a former Iowa corn grower, also won the corn growers' judging contest. In the shucking contest shocked corn was husked on a roped-off street. Class champions in the five classes of the show were: Class 1 (open) E. G. Wiesner, Brooks; class 2 (hy brids) Clayton Nyberg, Tualitan; class 3 (hybrid corn production) F. S. Green, Stanfield; class 4 (4-H clubs) Bill Sperb, Canby, and class 5 (FFA) Jack Heinz, Molalla. Dr. J. P. Stewart, Eye-Sight Spe cialist of Pendleton will be at the HEPPNER HOTEL on WEDNES DAY, DECEMBER 4th. NOTICE TO CREDITORS IN THE COUNTY COURT OF THE STATE OF OREGON FOR MOR ROW COUNTY. Many Elk Taken; Cows Outnumber Bulls Nimrods who took part in the 1940 elk hunt bagged a total of 2,273 elk, of which 1,127 were bull elk and 1, 146 were cow elk. A total of 4,192 hunters checked in and out of the various checking stations conducted by the Oregon State Game commis sion. The number of hunters who held only bull tags totalled 2,310, those with cow tags, 982; and the number possessing both types of tags total led 900. . According to reports received by Frank B. Wire from the checking stations, the elk were in far better shape than in the past. The large increase in the bull kill was thru out the elk area and not concen trated in one section. In 1939 a total number of 2,022 hunters bagged 842 bulls and 379 cows. In that year only 500 cow elk tags were issued, but in 1940 the commission sold 2,000 cow elk tags. Water Purity Tests by OSC Show Bad Sources Oregon State College. Only an average of 22 percent of the samples of water submitted to the O.S.C. bacteriology department from all parts of Oregon are definitely pure and safe for drinking, reports G. V. Copson, head of the department. Figures show that 40 per cent of samples submitted are definitely bad and 38 percent are doubtful. Members of 4-H clubs throughout rural and suborban areas are active in having samples sent in for testing, says Copson. Tests are made for purity, odor and hardness of water. HYBRID CORN GAINS IN STATE Approximately 12 per cent of Ore gon field corn grown in 1940 was from hyrid seed, reports Dr. R. E. Fore in a new O.S.C. extension cir cular entitled "Hybrid Corn in Ore gon." The circular lists 13 Oregon producers of hybrid seed for certi fication. Dr. Fore believes that the percentage in this state will be doubled next year judging by the speed with which the hybrids have been adopted in the corn belt. This year nine out of every 10 acres in Iowa wa planted with hybrid seed. Warning is given never to save seed from a hybrid crop no matter how good the ears are, because the var iety "breaks up" in the second gen eration.
