Work Progress Here
Range improvement and other
erosion-control demonstration work
of Morrow county ranchers in the
Heppner CCC camp area was studi
ed and photographed during the last
week by Soil Conservation service
representatives from the Spokane
regional office.
The results that local operators
have obtained since the camp was
located here in the fall of 1935 were
praised by W. T. White, chief of the
Pacific Northwest regional range
management division, who headed
the party.
"Fine growths of bunchgrass we
have seen on ranges that had been
grazed down pretty closely during
drought and depression years good
stands of important supplemental
alfalfa feed along Willow and Hinton
creeks and other streams in the camp
area, and other progressive evi
dences of long strides in land-use
improvement in this area tell their
own story of the conservation ac
complishments by farmers and
ranchers in the Heppner area,
White observed. "It certainly has
bsen a pleasure to see these things
and to observe how Morrow county
landowners and operators are keep
ing pace with ranchers and farmers
elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest
and throughout the country in the
practice of wise, profitable land use."
White also called attention to the
fact that ranchers who have been
able to defer spring use of their
anges by having additional pasture
or hay are reporting gratifying re
turn of the native perennial grasses
on these ranges. He pointed out
that proper livestock distribution
and avoiding of too early spring
grazing are effective range prac
tices being followed successfully.
Acompanying White were Waldo
Fransden of the Spokane range div- I
ision, and Frank B. Harper and
Howard Harris of the information
service there.
The Heppner localities visited in
eluded Hinton creek, where much
channel stabilization and realign
ment work has been done; Little
Butter creek, Willow creek and
Balm fork. The visitors were con
ducted through the camp area by
R. T. Michener, camp engineer, and
Thomas I. Wilson, camp farm plan
ner. They also conferred with Camp
Superintendent James E. Kistner,
who is in charge of soil conservation
service operations in the camp area.
Ranches visited and photograph
ed for spring development gully
dam, grass stand and other pictures
included those of R. A. Thompson
south of Heppner, W. H. Cleveland
in both the Willow and Hinton val
leys, John Brosnan on Little Butter
creek, and Frank Wilkinson on Wil
low creek.
