Time for Politics
MORE than anything else to im
press the strength being gained
by the campaign of Wendell L. Will
kie for the presidency is the last
minute appearance on the radio of
Mr. Roosevelt in a series of five
"political" speeches. Up to this time
Mr. Roosevelt has held himself aloof
from the campaign leaving the ap
pearance that the stress of national
emergency was drawing too greatly
upon his time to make a campaign
for re-election and that the demand
for his services for a third term
was so overwhelming as to be in
evitable. Mr. Willkie changed the picture.
He has put his message across so
forcibly to the people that third
term strategists have found no other
way out than to have Mr. Roosevelt
take the stump himself.
In the first of his addresses last
night, Mr. Roosevelt said nothing
new. The address could have been
one of several delivered four years
ago. It dismissed opposition with a
wave of the hand and took credit
unto the administration for every
thing except the national debt.
By inference Mr. Roosevelt im
plied that the press has sold out to
Mr. Willkie. "Only a part of the
press and the radio remain free,"
he said. This statement calls for re
sentment from the newspapers, and
is too misleading to be ignored. The
press voluntarily suplporting Mr.
Willkie has the courage to call its
soul its own. The radio has not, be
cause it is under a commission in
Washington that is responsible to
the executive. So far there has not
been, and God grant that there will
never be, a commission set up in
Washington to regulate the news
papers. DRAFT REGISTRATION

REX ELLIS SAYS:
"As long as Congressman Pierce has left
his posit in Washington to campaign in
Eastern Oregon ....
I CHALLENGE PIERCE TO
EXPLAIN Why Pierce Voted NOT to in
crease the penalty on Treason and Sabo
tage. Because on June 5, 1939, Pierce
voted not to make it EVEN a five-year
penalty for any foreign alien or person
who advocated the overthrow of the gov
ernment by force.
EXPLAIN Why he voted against the Dies
committee appropriation ; which commit
tee was investigating un-American and
Fifth Column activities in the United
States.
EXPLAIN How he can be a FRIEND of
the FARMER and vote not to deport
Harry Bridges.
EXPLAIN When the Congressmen start
ed passing on the constitutionality of a
law instead of the Supreme Court.
EXPLAIN Why the American Legion, a
non-political but patriotic organization,
passed a resolution to leave Walter Pierce
at home.
EXPLAIN Why Pierce has the C.I.O. En
dorsement. REX ELLIS CONTENDS that the Congressmen have got to stop pussy
footing and playing up to the subversive elements of the United States, in
order to get votes, and state voting Americanism.
