Page Eight SOCIETY CHIT-CHAT By JUNE SMITH Word has been received of the election of Mrs. Charles Cox as dis trict president of the American Le gion auxiliary. This district com prises eight units, including Heppner, Pendleton, Hermiston, Milton-Free-water, Arlington, Condon and Fossil. The election was held at the state convention of the organization held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Seaside. A meeting of the local Auxiliary was held Monday evening at the home of the president, Mrs. W. O. Bayless, with nine members present. Plans were made for the coming in stallation of officers. The Eastern Star social club en tertained its members last Saturday afternoon at the Masonic hall with four tables of bridge in play. Mrs. W. O. Bayless and Mrs. W. O. Dix were hostesses, and Mrs. D. M. Ward won high score for the afternoon's play, with Mrs. P. W. Mahoney re ceiving consolation. The Episcopalian auxiliary met this afternoon at the Parish hall with Mrs. Frank Wilkinson and Mrs. W. O. Bayless as hostesses. The pre sident, Mrs. L. E. Dick conducted the business meeting, in which plans for the coming bazaar and business for the year were discussed. An interesting meeting of the Woolgrower's auxiliary was held last Friday, beginning with a lunch eon at Lucas Place. Following the business meet, cards were played, with Mrs. Phil Mahoney winning hitrh score. A door prize was won by Mrs. Lucy Rodgers. Guests for the afternoon were Mrs. Kay Fer guson, Mrs. Gene Ferguson and Mrs. G. A. Howard. Union Missionary society will hold j a meeting Friday aftemon at the Methodist church. Mrs. Blaine Isom is program chairman, and Mrs. L. E. Bisbee president of the organization. Fifteen members of the Book worms met Tuesday evening at Lucas Place for dinner. After dinner they assembled at the home of the pres ident, Miss Leta Humphreys, for a business meeting and election of of ficers. New officers for this year are Mrs. Vawter Parker, president; Mrs. L. E. Mr. and Mrs. Cornett Green re turned Sunday from a week's vaca tion trip that took them to Diamond lake for fishing, the ocean, Portland and Salem fair. Mr. Logie Richardson and Dick Wilkinson returned Sunday from a ten-day trip to San Francisco, where they visited the fair, and Mr. and Mrs. Richardson, who had been there for a short while, were guests at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Olsen. Mrs. Harvey Miller, who has been very ill at the Heppner hospital for some time, is showing improvement and hopes to be at home soon. Mrs. Harlan McCurdy accompan ied her two children, Maxine and Harlan, Jr., when they left Wednes day for Pacific university at Forest Grove. Mrs. Glen Dennis and son, Dick O'Shea, and daughter Sally, of Port land, visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Colin last week end leaving Tuesday for Ellensburg where they will visit relatives. Dick is well known in Heppner, having attended school here and is now preparing to enter Oregon State col lege, after being a student at Seattle Prep. Mr. and Mrs. John H. Davidson of Port Angeles were week end guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Bennett. Mr. Davidson is Mrs. Bennett's brother. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Alfred spent last week end in Salem, going down Saturday and returning Tuesday. They visited with Mr. Alfred's bro ther, Lee Alfred, in Silverton also, and are planning to return to the capital city this week end, with a stop-over in Bend. Mrs. M. P. Hanford, assisted by Mrs. H.
