OSC Engineer Designs
Improved Dry Kiln Fan
Oregon State College. A new
type fan for use in lumber dry
kilns which, in prelimiinary tests,
has been twice as efficient as pres
ent fans for this purpose, has been
designed in the engineering experi
ment station laboratories by Arthur
D. Hughes, assistant professor of
mechanical engineering.
Hughes gave a comprehensive re
port on this research before the
meeting of the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers in Spokane
the first week in September. The
research project which led to the
successful development was finan
ced in part by the Western Pine as
sociation of Portland. A large air
tunnel 40 feet long and six feet
square was used in the experiments.
LEAVE MOTOR COOL
An extremely hot motor should
be allowed to cool for at least fifteen
minutes before adding water to the
radiator if the supply has become,
low, according to the Emergency
Road Service of the Oregon State
Motor association. The sudden
change in temperature caused by
cold water may crack the motor
block or cylinder head.
