Heavy Property Tax
Subject of Bulletin
The serious implications of rural
property tax delinquency in Oregon
are emphasized in a new bulletin
just issued by the O. S. C. agricul
tural experiment station, subtitled,
"Rural Tax Delinquency Study of
the State of Oregon." The bulletin,
by Dr. W. H. Dreesen, agricultural
economist, summarizes the informa
tion obtained from extensive studies
made of the degree of delinquency
during the worst years of the de-
Dression oeriod.
Data included covers the years
1928-1935, hence do not embrace the
recovery neriod. Local rather than
state government depends on prop
erty taxes in Oregon, the bulletin
points out.
"The burdensomeness of the gen
eral property tax is evident from the
fact that the total delinquency in
the state exceeded $46,000,000 m
1935, and that the counties are now
holding in excess of 1,780.000 acres of
tax-reverted lands, and 154,000 city
and suburban lots," Dr. Dreesen
points out in drawing conclusions
from the study.

Walter E. Moore and Dr. Fred E
Farrior were two former Heppner-
ites who escaped from the blazing
grandstand at Pendleton's Round
Up park last Thursday evening. Mr.
Moore, who was in, the city with
his family Saturday to take in the
Rodeo, said both he and Dr. Farrior
forgot about their automobiles, park
ed near the grandstand, until they
had gone half way across the field.
The main escape for the 1500 people
out to witness a softball game was
out the front of the grandstand and
across the field to the river side. By
the time he reached his car the
flames were close to it, and when
he attempted to drop a window he
auicklv closed it again as the heat
and fumes were almost overwhelm
ing. Mr. Moore removed his car to
safety before little damage had been
done, but Dr. Farrior's car was
damaged considerably, he said.
