Summer Bible
School Classes
By HARDMAN HIGH SCHOOL
Friday, August 2 saw the closing
of a summer Bible school which in
every respect has been most grati
fying. Attendance maintaining a high
average; work and conduct pleasing
and all that could be asked; and
expressions of enthusiasm and ap
preciation from pupils and matrons
have made this school a memor
able one.
One pupil, Perry Adams, holds a
first high in not having missed a
day nor been tardy even once. Others
were awarded perfect attendance
credits for not having missed after
being enrolled. Those received beau
tiful gold and silver star awards
for Sunday morning and evening
church attendance .during the three
week school term.
This particular type of Bible
school features Bible memory work
with the definite, practical study of
the Bible, systematically planned,
taught and directed, the Lord Jesus
Christ as Savior of all mankind.
The school was rounded out with
a program of Scripture, catechism,
and oral recitation work, interspersed
with songs and choruses, all of which
was followed by a picnic dinner,
provided by friends and parents. A
Bible school next year? We hope so.
Many are already asking for it and
in the meantime much fruit is
looked for from this initial effort.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Leathers and
Jean returned from the mill near
Pilot Rick where they have been
since the closing of school. Carl
took Raymond Reid's place at Reed's
Mill, when Raymond quit to work
in the mill on the Hamilton ranch.
Greener's crew of loggers finished
' last week with the timber on the
Tyndal Robison place and are now
on the Ed Merrill land.
On Sunday morning Mr. and Mrs.
Neal Knighten drove to La Grande
to take Vera McDaniel and Juanita
Byers that far on their way to
Lostine, where they will spend a
week in a Christian worker's sum
mer camp.
Mrs. Gladys Corrigall and Shirley
Ann, accompanied by George Samu
els, all of Echo, spent Sunday here
as guests at the Sam McDaniel and
other homes.
Sunday was such a pleasant day
that a number of persons spent it in
the mountains. Dr. and Mrs. A. D.
McMurdo and Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Nickerson, all of Heppner, Mr. and
Mrs. Sam McDaniel, Jr., of Reed's
Mill, and Mr. and Mrs. William
Greener all spent part of the day
at Red Hill, where Mr. and Mrs. O.
H. Leathers and Junior are spending
the summer. Owen is the guard at
the lookout.
Mr. and Mrs. Austin Devins and
some of Reed's Mill went on a pic
nic and pleasure trip on Sunday,
taking in Kinzua and other places.
Miss Lucille Vale, county nurse,
was in Hardman on Tuesday. She
checked up on some cases, and also
named the healthiest boy and the
healthiest girl from each of the two
4-H health clubs The Blue Moun
tain Health club, consisting of 18
grade school pupils, and the Happy
Health club, consisting of six high
school students.
Cool nights, cold mornings and
warm shiny days characterized the
weather for the past week up to
Tuesday, when the sultry condition
of the air indicated a change. There
is a feel of autumn in the air, as if
the calendar were off about a month.

Set August 30-31

be held at Irrigon, August 30 and
31. Robert Smith is president and
Harvey Warner, secretary-treasurer.
Rev. and Mrs. Freeman from Cam
as, Wash., were weekend guests of
Rev. and Mrs. Harness. Rev. Free
man filled the pulpit at the Sunday
evening services in the Pentecostal
church.
Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Seaman from
Sandy visited Mrs. Seaman's par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Steward,

Pendleton, Ore., July 31. Competition, always keen at the Pendleton
Bound-Up, will be at fever pitch at the thirty-first annual rodeo, Sept.
11, 12, 13, 14, not only for prize money but for the coveted $5000 sterling
silver bam Jackson trophy for champion all round coyboy. The trophy
must be won three times for permanent possession and no less than
three top-notch performers have twice won the prize.
They're Bill McMakin, of Trail City, South Dakota, 1939 and 1937
winner shown here with the trophy; Everett Bowman, of Hillsdale,
Arizona who placed both in 1932 and 1935, and Ike Rude, of Magnum,
Oklahoma, champion in 1931 and again in 193G, when he tied with Carl
Arnold.
The Trophy was presented by the Portland Oregon Journal in
memory of the editor, the late Sam Jackson, former Pcntlletonian.
Competition is on a point basis, for bucking, steer roping, steer bull
dogging and calf roping, under Rodeo Association of America rules.
All three cowboys are well toward the top in the R.A.A. list of high
point winners at 1940 rodeos.
