Crop Output for
1940 Ample, OSC
Report Reveals
Crop production in the United
States this year promises to be fairly
in line with probable requirements,
in general, with a gross output only
slightly under 1939, reports the O S.
C. extension service in its current
review of the agricultural situation.
Some decline occurred in the farm
price level during recent weeks in
the country as a whole, but the Or- Best results in other states, how
egon general farm price level was 1 ever, have been obtained by leaving
bly be accompanied with one or two
less cultivations, however, if the op
erations are started at the week
stage of the plant For morning
glories that appears to be about 30
days after emergence, but cultiva
tion two to three weeks after emer
gence is pobably safer.
A few of the Oregon county
agents are conducting some wilting
trials this season. Heretofore, most
of the burning attempts have been
aimed at completely consuming the
plants, rather than to sear them.
maintained, according to data in the
report.
The principal variation in crop
prospects from last year which is of
particular significance to the farm
ers in Oregon is forage supplies. The
hay crop of the country is expected
to be very large probably the lar
gest production since 1927. Despite
an increase of about 2 per cent in
hay-consuming livestock, principal
ly cattle and sheep, the hay crop
will be large enough for liberal feed
ing in most areas with considerable
carry-over next year.
The report contains detailed in
formation regarding prospective pro
duction and farm prices on a large
number of farm commodities, in
cluding wheat, feed grains, hay, seed
crops, potatoes, truck crops, hops,
beans, fruits and nuts, dairy products,
chickens and eggs, and pig crop
prospects.
The general level of farm prices
at mid-June in the country as1 a
whole, was 95 per cent of the 1910-
1914 level, compared with 123 as
the index of prices paid by farmers
for commodities. Considering inter
est, taxes, and wages for farm labor
in addition, farm costs were approx
imately 125 per cent of the pre-war
average. The Oregon index of prices
received by farmers was 70 per cent
of the 1926-1930 level, compared
with 67 for the country as a whole,
With the volume of production of
all crops combined expected to be
nearly the same as in 1939, the re
port points out that gross production
in 1939 was the same as in 1938
and just equal to the average from
1924 to 1929. However, the increass
in all livestock and livestock pro-j
ducts in 1939 was 6 per cent over
1938 and 13 per cent over the 1924
1929 average. Animal production in
1940 is expected to show an increase
in cattle and sheep but some de
crease in hogs and poultry. Copies
of the report are available from
county agents or direct from the
college.
WEED CONTROL
BRIEFS...
By Lawrence Jenkins,
Assistant Farm Crops Extension
Specialist, O. S. C.
The most outstanding develop
ment in weed control in the past
few years has been to prove defin
itely that perennial weeds can be
killed by cultivation. Alternate
summer fallow and wheat will kill
morning glories. Nothing is lost by
a year of grain or similar crops be
tween years of summer fallow.
The best time to start cultivating
Canada thistle in the spring is when
the thistles are 12 to 15 inches high,
or from three to four weeks after
thev emerge in the spring. The re
peat cultivations are given 10 days
after they come through the ground
Ninety-five per cent kill or better
has been obtained after one season
of summer fallow with this method.
Preliminary tests in other states
now being tried in Oregon, indicate
that successive wilting of perennial
'weeds, such as white top and Can
ada thistle, will give better results
than using chlorate. Refinements in
the method will have to be made
before it will be cheaper than chlor
ates on morning glory and Russian
' knapweed.
Malheur, Deschutes, Umatilla,
Morrow, Wasco, Union and Baker
counties have various degrees of
county-wide organization through
the county court or weed councils
for weed control work. s
Cultivation of weed infestations
can start any time during the grow
ing season. Eradication will proba-
them so that they will not entirely
wilt down for one or two days.
