SOCIETY CHIT-CHAT By JUNE SMITH The 4th of July is gone and near ly forgotten, but news of how some of the townsfolk spent the holiday is interesting. A group composed of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cohn and family, Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Barratt and fam ily, with Dick Hoyt of Portland and Bob Pinckney, and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Ferguson and family, Mr. and Mrs. William Bennett, Bill Blake, Lowell Ashbaugh, and Bob Applegate drove to Blue Mountain springs Wednesday afternoon, re turning Friday morning. Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Ward left Wednesday for Baker, where they enjoyed the 4th of July celebration. They were house guests of Mrs. Ward's cousin, Mrs. Robert McCord, who was Miss Neva Chidsey when she lived in Heppner. An event of the program was the crowning of 94 year old Mrs. Jessie McCord, who is the great grandmother of Mrs. McCord's daughter, Shirley. Another group of Heppner people spent the 4th at Hidaway. These were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Thompson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Thompson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Jones and family, Mrs. W. O. Bayless and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Moore of Pendleton joined the group. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Ferguson spent the holiday at Gold Beach, where they visited Ollie Ferguson. Another group, who remained at home, met together for a pot luck dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs Fred Lucas. These included Mr and Mrs. L. E. Dick, Mr. and Mrs, C. W. McNamer and Mrs. Lucy Rodgers. Another pot luck dinner was held on the lawn of the Phil Mahoney home and comprised Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Pinckney and guests, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Alberger of Portland, Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Crawford, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Smith and Mrs. Harriet Mahoney. Mrs. J. G. Thomson, Jr., entertain ed her bridge club at her home Wednesday afternoon. Guests for the affair, which was a dessert bridge, were Mrs. Phil Mahoney, Mrs. Jap Crawford, Mrs. Vawter Parker, Mrs. Ray Ferguson, Mrs. L. D. Tibbies, Mrs. Orville Smith, and Mrs. Leonard Schwarz. Mr. and Mrs. Earle Bryant are the parents of a baby bov born July 5th at Heppner. The young man weighed 6y2 pounds and has been named Robert Allen. Mr. and Mrs. Homer Haves have as house guests Mrs. Hayes' sister and brother-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cunningham and baby. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Alfred will spend the week end in Portland. Mrs. W. S. Bell of Spokane, mo ther of Mrs. B. C. Pinckney, is vis iting with the Pinckneys. She is completing a trip which took her across the country, and included on her itinerary New York world's fair, Washington, D. C, Quebec. Mrs. Frank Wilkinson drove a car load of vacationers to Hidawav yes terday, where they will stay for a week. The party was composed of her daughters, Shirley and Frances, and Franc sf house euestl. Dick held a mid-term meeting of the Auxiliary Thursday at her home. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Kinne left Tu esday for a week's vacation, which they will spend at Rockaway beach. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lucas have moved to their new home and place of business, the home belonging to Mrs. Cora Crawford. Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Barratt left Tuesday morning for Sun Valley, Idaho,, where they will attend a di rector's meeting of the Northwest Production Credit association. Mrs. Hubert Gaily left Sunday for Pendleton, where she will join Mr. Gaily, and where they will make their home. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Doolittle re turned Tuesday from Portland, where their son Paul underwent an appendectomy. He is at the Emanuel hospital. Kemp Dick, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Dick, is in the hospital at The Dalles where he is undergoing medical treatment. Miss Ethel Thompson of Portland is spending this week with her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Thompson. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Tetz of Grants Pass were week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Ferguson.
