McDanicIs Observe
55th Anniversary
By HARDMAN HIGH SCHOOL
Relatives of Mrs. Sam McDaniel
arrived from Indiana last week for
a visit, Mr. and Mrs. Al Hiatt of
Hammond and Matt Cross- of Hebron
who visited at the McDaniel home
two years ago. Mr. Cross is Mrs.
McDaniel's only living brother-in-law
and Mrs. Hiatt is her daughter.
Mr. and Mrs. Hiatt's dughters, Mrs.
Pauline Wale and Miss Jarretta Hi
att, accompanied them. Aunt Hattie
feels better recently and is able to
sit up. She is enjoying this visit
very much. Tuesday, July 2, was
the 55th wedding anniversary of
Aunt Hattie and Uncle Sam and
they spent it happily, surrounded
by friends and relatives and with
the good wishes of the whole com
munity. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Knighten and
small son and daughter of Condon
visited at the Lewis Knighten home
and elsewhere here in Hardman on
Sunday. Elmer is a brother of Nel
son and Henry, Knighten.
The Rev. Mr. Lee Hall and fam
ily of Bend visited here briefly on
Tuesday of last week. Mr. Hall held
special services here for two weeks
in the early spring.
Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Steers, Mrs.
Tom Mclntyre and Mr. and Mrs.
Tom Brown attended the sale of farm
stock and equipment one. day last
week.
The Rev. Mr. Chase and Mrs.
Chase of the Baptist church of Spray
held services in the hall last Thurs
day evening. They plan to return
each week if the people here wish.
The Misses Mary, Ann and Rita
Mclntyre went to Pendleton on last
Thursday, returning on Sunday eve
ning. Mrs. Joe Batty of Eightmile, who
had been here to care for her new
grand daughter, returned to her
home on Wednesday of last week.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Stevens of
Hamilton and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer
Musgrave of Fox Valley visited here
on Tuesday and Wednesday of last
week. Mr. and Mrs. Musgrave also
went to the Noel Dobyns place.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond McDonald
were in Pendleton the first part of
last week and again on Saturday
when they remained for several
days.
On Monday of last week Mrs.
Marvin Brannon and her brother,
Donald Morton, . went to Portland
with Jim Inskeep. Mr. Inskeep went
on to Salem. Mrs. Brannon will
remain in Portland with her par
ents for some time.
Business visitors and shoppers in
Heppner on Monday were Mr. and
Mrs. Neal Knighten, Mrs. Owen
Leathers, Ms. Ada Cannon, Mrs.
Truma Cannon, Miss Charlotte Can
non, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Brown and
Sam McDaniel.
On July 1 Owen Leathers and
Junior returned to their old post at
Red Hill in the forest service,
On Saturday evening the school
board of Union High No. 1 met,
with a number of interested patrons
in attendance. The new director,
Jim Hams, was sworn in, and Mrs,
Neal Knighten was elected as clerk,
Definite action was taken toward
standardization of the local high
school.
The church in Hardman: Services
for Sunday, July 6, 11 a. m., with
"All Things New" as the theme of
the message; at 7:30 p. m., "God's
Appraisement of World Powers,"
Daniel 7.
The church is planning a vaca
tion Bible school for the children
of school age, to begin on Monday,
July 15, and to run for two weeks,
with a three hour session each fore
noon. More of this project will be
announced later.
The threatened storm on Monday
night was just a bluff a few drops
of rain, quite a lot of wind and much
dust, with everything calm and
bright on Tuesday morning.

Farewell Party at
Bergstrem Home
The John Bergstrom home in
Eightmile was the scene of a party
last Friday afternoon honoring Mrs.
Emma Ayers and Mrs. Vera Reed,
who have been residents at Eightmile
postoffice the last few years. Mrs.
Ayers has served as postmaster and
Mrs. Reed has been the teacher in
that district. They are leaving for
the Oregon coast to make their home.
Enjoying the afternoon with the
honored guests were Mrs. Carolyn
Bergstrom, Mrs. Ola Redding, Mrs.
Floy Akers, Mrs. Carrie Becket,
Mrs. Marjorie Worden, Mrs. Hannah
Anderson, Mrs. Gladys Becket, Mrs.
