Baccalaureate to be
Held Sunday

Baccalaureate services for

class of '40 will be held Sunday,
May 12, at 2 p. m. at the Christian
church in lone. Rev. W. W, Head
of Cathlamet, Wash., will deliver
the address.
Student body elections were held
Monday with the following results:
President, Melvin Brady; vice pres
ident, Charlotte Cannon; secretary-
treasurer, Betty Lou Lindsay; yell
leader, Eileen Sperry; athletic man
ager, Ernest McCabe, and transport
ation manager, Bill Eubanks.
The last ball game of the season
was played here Tuesday with Lex
ington, and resulted in a 20-7 vic
tory for the home boys Following
is the line-up for lone: Catcher,
Bob Hoskins and Jim Ledbetter;
pitcher, Norman Bergstrom; first,
Walter Corley and Louis Rood; sec
ond, John Doherty; short stop, Bill
Eubanks; third, Melvin Brady; left
field, Clyde Pettyjohn; centerfield,
Claude Pettyjohn and Bill Biddle;
right field, Roy Pettyjohn and Ted
Peterson.
E. M. Baker is a patient in the
hospital at Heppner, suffering from
pleurisy. Mrs. Baker is staying
there with him.
Fred Ritchie of Vernonia is a
visitor at the home of his brother,
Arthur Ritchie. He recently grad
uated from barber college.
Mrs. J. E. Swanson and Mr. and
Mrs. Garland Swanson and children
spent the week end in Salem.
Mr. and Mrs. John Turner of
Baker spent Sunday here with Mrs.
Turner's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Engelman.
Mrs. Gene Engelman departed
for her home in Portland Sunday
after a week's visit at the Frank
Engelman home.

fiftieth anniversary celebration, ob
served by the St. Moriah lodge of
Masons at Condon last Wednesday
evening were Geo. N. Ely, E. R. Lun
dell, Elmer Griffith, Bert Johnson,
W. C. Robei-ts, Geo. C. Krebs, Alex
Huber and John W. Krebs.
Mrs. Ella Davidson enjoyed a
visit from her sister-in-law and hus
band, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Probst
of Pomeroy, Wash. They stopped
overnight when returning from the
Masonic celebration at Condon. Mr.
Probst was a charter member of
that lodge.
According to the daily paper, Mrs,
Edith C Hindle. of Nelscott, a sister
of Frank A. Young of Dry Fork,
passed away May 2.
Ladies from one who joined the
Lexington Ladies Aid in their meet
ing last Wednesday afternoon were

Rainfall for April, recorded at
Morgan, was 1.74 inches, making a
total of 10.01 since September first.
Carles Carlson and Misses Fran
ces Stewarl and Gladys Breshears
spent Sunday at La Grande.

Sparks. Miss Anne Mclntyre who
had worked on several important
roles, particularly as lead in one
of the dances, was ill with the meas
les. Miss Rita Mclntyre, as Harvest
gave an attractive dance and made
a very creditable appearance.
A number of one-act plays, songs
and readings will be given at the
eighth grade graduation May 15 at
the high school auditorium. Every
one is invited.
The last meeing of the Clothing I
club was held on Thursday, May 2,
with all the members present. A
song and also a demonstration were
planned for achievement day.
Harold Stevens purcahsed a cat
erpillar which was delivered at their
place Sunday.
Dorothy and Berna Ebson of Al
pine spent the week end at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Neal Knighten.
Guy Hastings left on Sunday to
go back to Al Bergstrom's at Eight
mile to work. Guy has been here
for about two weeks, due to a
blood clot on the back of his leg.
Business visitors and shoppers in
Heppner Saturday were Mr. and
Mrs. Neal Knighten, Mr. and Mrs.
J. B. Adams, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin
Branon, Misses Frances Inskeep and
Vera McDaniel, also Lewis Batty,
Nelson Knighten and Guy Chapin.
A meeting was held at the high
school on Saturday, May 14, for
the purpose of voting on standard
ization of the high school. It car
ried 38 to 2.
A picnic is being given for the
community on Thursday, managed
by the grade school. Everyone is
invited but the place it still unde
cided. A large number of people from
here attended the dance at Rhea
creek. All reported a good time.
Mr. and Mrs. Everett Harshman
and Gay visited the Ethel McDaniel
home on Saturday.
Bob Downs visited the Lewis Bat
ty's on Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Owen Leathers took
Ed McDaniel to the Hayden ranch
on Sunday. Operation at the Hay
den mill will begin on Monday and
Mr. McDaniel is one of the work-

Ends at Hardman

The high school again cordially

Carey Hastings was home from
shearing. He has been in Lewiston,
Idaho, for about a month. He

the May festival at Heppner on Fri
day, and reported an enjoyable time.
Mrs. Marvin Brannon spent the
week with Mrs. Neal Knighten at
Alpine.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Moore and
family visited on Sunday at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Neal Knigh
ten. Mrs. Oren McDaniel and children
went to Lone Rock Friday to visit
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack
Andrews.
Elwood Hastings started working
for Archie Bechdolt Monday.
Mrs. Max Buschke returned Sat
urday from the Ben Buschke's
where she has been staying for the
last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Reid and
Mrs. Bernard Bleakman returned
home Saturday from a week's visit
with Raymond's parents at New
berg, and Mr. and Mrs. James Mc
Daniel at Stayton.
More sunshine than we have been
having and little rain marked last
week as a very unusual one. The
sun, when it did shine, was ex
ceedingly bright and several peo
ple already have light cases of sun
burn and freckles. There is hardly
a cloud in the sky today, so evi
dently more sunny weather is com
ing. MILL HANDLES WOOD
Heppner Lumber company has
purchased the truck and fuel busi
ness conducted by F W Turner and
is now receiving orders at the mill
for slab wood and other fuel pro
ducts put out there.
