P. P. & L. Co. First
in Safety Contest
The fleet of trucks operated by
Pacific Power & Light company
stands in first place among all large
public utilities in the United States
at the two-thirds mark of the na
tion-wide fleet safety contest spon
sored by the National Safety Coun
cil, according to a report just re
ceived by R. P. Kinne, agent for
the company.
Nearly 1200 fleets are competing
in the contest, which includes all
industries in the United States. In
the utilities division are 149 fleets,
49 of them in the large utility sec
tion. The contest ends June 20.
During the first eight months of
the contest, Pacific Power & Light
cnmtianv's 105 trucks were driven
7nfi0(10 miles eauivalent to more
than 28 times around the world
with only one accident.
Credit for the fine showing of the
truck fleet was given by Mr. Kinne
to the company's safety first pro
gram under George I. Drennan,
field superintendent, which for a
number of years has emphasized
safe driving as well as first aid and
other safety measures.
In the western public utilities pas
senger car division, Pacific's 65-car
Heppner
fleet had only one accident for every
193,000 miles of operation, for a to
tal of three accidents in 579,000
miles. This brought the company
ninth place at trfe eight-month
mark of the contest.
For the nation as a whole, all
fleets showed a 2 per cent increase
in accidents during the first eight
months of the contest. By divisions,
public utilities showed a 2 per cent
increase, all passenger car fleets a
5 per cent increase and western pas
senger cars a 6 per cent increase.
