CCC Unit Building
Highway Fire Breaks
A detachment of CCC boys work
ing under J. L. Mills from the graz
ing service camp G-93 at Keating,
is building fire breaks along the
highway from lone to Heppner Jet.
Work started on April 8 and will
be completed before dry weather
starts, Mills stated.
A strip of land 20 feet wide is
cleared of all inflammable material.
The fire line is run an average of
150 feet from the highway and
weeds and dry grass will be burned
off the highway to the break to
protect adjacent grazing lands from
fires such as destroyed thousands
of acres of grass last year.
The fire breaks will be extended
from Heppner Junction to Board
man, according to Mills, wh6 states
that this type of work is being
done in many grazing areas to pre
vent fires from being started thru
carlessness of smokers and other
causes.
