Samuels Dies at Pendleton By HARD MAN HIGH SCHOOL The death of Mrs. George Sam uels (Maud McDaniel) again brot grief to our little community, for it is the third death in a very short time. Mrs. Samuels was a sufferer from asthma, and on Friday had an attack followed by pneumonia, and she was taken to the hospital in Pendleton on the same day, where she died about 7:45 a. m. on Sunday. On Saturday her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam McDaniel, with Mr. and Mrs. Carey Hastings went to Pendleton and were with her when she died. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon at the I. O. O. F. hall. A full write-up will be given next week. On Tuesday morning those from Hardman who are on the census taking line-up started to work with Miss Mary Mclntyre in the Hepp ner district, Lewis Batty in the Eightmile and Gooseberry, and Ted Burnside in the Hardman district. Miss Oleta Raimey visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Rai mey, at Condon over the week end, returning on Sunday. Mrs. Henry Owen went to Union Tuesday to live near where her hus band is employed. Earl Redding has gone to work for Lake Beckner for a few days. Business visitors in Heppner the latter part of the week were Mr. and Mrs. Sam McDaniel, Mrs. Dick Steers, Mr. and Mrs. Tyndal Rob inson, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Bran non, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Reed, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie McDaniel, Mrs. Ethel McDaniel, Miss Frances Inskeep, also Cecil and Dallas Mc Daniel. The Happy Health club met on Monday, April 1, with reports given by Jeanne Leathers and Nona In skeep. On April 8, reports were given by Vern McDaniel and Irl Clary. Miss Rita Robinson returned home from Heppner on Wednesday and stayed until Sunday. Misses Jeanne and Lucille Reid and Ethelan Johnson of Spokane spent the week end at Reids mill. Mr. Reid returned to Spokane with them. ' One of the WPA trappers, Dick Steers, who has been working on the job for 13 days, made a good find, taking a den with ten young coyotes and the old mother. He got these on the Lon McCabe ranch on Eight mile. This is one of the largest finds that has been reported in recent years. The 4-H club gave a dancing party in the high school auditorium on last Saturday night. Maple bars and coffee were sold to get enough funds to have the required $50 for four scholarships to Corvallis. Due to the critical condition of Mrs. Samuels the attendance was very small, and the full amount was not raised, so the high school student body gave the difference. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Howell and sons of Monument came over to at tend the funeral of Mrs. George Samuets. Mrs. Howell is a sister of Mrs. Samuels. Achievement day for the five local 4-H clubs will be held on May 8. Since each of the teachers lead at least one club, it is necessary to complete before school closes on May 10 for the high school. A six-inning softball game was played between the grade school and high school teams on Wednes day of last week. In spite of the fact that it rained during most of the game, everyone seemed to have a good time. The line-ups were as follows: for the grade school, Lee McRoberts, catch er, Ollie Hastings and Junior Lea thers, alternate pitchers and fielders, Cecil McDaniel lb, Alene Inskeep ss, Norvin Adams 2b, Juanita By er 3b, Ollie Hastings, Junior Lea thers, Delmer Buschke and Alvin Byer fielders; high school, Irl Clary p, Mildred Clary and Vera McDan iel alternate catcher and first base man, Jeanne Leathers 2b, Frances Inskeep 3b, Nona Inskeep fielder. Although the high school had only six players they defeated the grade school 29-11. It was a good game and called a number of spectators. G. I. Clary was umpire. The weather was much warmer last week but almost continual rain made the main and by-roads ex tremely muddy. Hardman did not have the thunder storm that some other places in the county exper ienced but no one can complain about moisture conditions. Farmers are waiting patiently to seed their spring grain. The heavy rains which lasted almost all of Monday night seemed to hold a" note of finality, which the clouds on Tuesday morn ing tried to contradict.
