Christmas Assembly
Santa Claus took the day off from
making his toys at the North Pole
to visit the Heppner high school on
Friday, December 22, 1939. Santa
read the various letters that had
been written by the students asking
for many humorous things.
After reading the letters he gave
every member of the student body
a lovely gift, an orange, and a strip
ed candy cane.
When Santa had gone speeches
were made by former members of
the student body who were home
from college for the holidays. Those
making speeches were Bob Scrivner,
John Crawford, Kathrvn Parker
and Bill Barratt.
The assembly was then turned
over to the Pep club who put on a
very interesting Professor Whiz
program. Tommy Starkey won the
contest and received a large cake
of Big Bath Soap.
While they were counting the
votes Dorotha Wilson sane "Stranee
Enchantment," accompanied by Pat
ty O'Harra.
Everyone was then wished a Mer
ry Christmas and the assembly
broke up.
New Year's Resolutions
The teachers of Hetmner hi eh
sincerely hope that some of the
students will take this opportunity
to make some New Year's resolu
tions.
With semester tests next week
the majority of students could make
a resolution to study. Especially
the seniors, whose graduation may
be determined by the outcome of
these tests. Other resolutions such
as maintaining order and courtesy
in the classrooms and the halls
would be appreciated.
Resolutions that would be appre
ciated are as follows:
By Dad Driscoll If we resolved
not to throw peanut shells and paper
on the floor.
By Miss Doughty If the students
in bookkeeping would resolve to
make less noise and sive her a
chance to talk.
By Mr. Peavy If the English 4
class would conduct themselves like
ladies and gentlemen.
By Mrs. Clark If the Freshman
class would resolve to cultivate
some manners.
By Miss McElhinney If the cho
rus would resolve to keep awake
during chorus practice.
By Mr. Blankenship If the sen
iors would resolve to study harder.
By Mr. Knox If the basketball
team would learn how to play bas
ketball. Dick O'Shea, former student in
Heppner, was visiting his cousin,
Philip Cohn during vacation. Dick
lives in Seattle where he is attend
ing prep school.
Isabel McFerrin spent the vaca
tion at her home in the mountains.
Guy Moore, with his parents,
spent Christmas with his sister, Mrs.
Neil Knighten of Hardman. Mrs.

Knighten has been ill for the last
week and will not be able to return
to her teaching duties at Alpine.
Mr. and Mrs. Knox and family
spent vacation in Portland.
Guess Who Twice
She is a senior; is one of the
strutting gals for the band. Had
the lead in the Senior Play. Most
of her time is taken up by a certain
trumpeter.
He is a sophomore; is an active
member of the Pep club. Was water
boy for the football team. Started
a scandal at the Christmas dance by
taking a certain girl home.
II Club Christinas Dance
The last school day before Christ
mas was topped off to a fine conclu
sion by an H club dance in the gym.
Decorations consisted of small fir
trees placed in the corners of the
gym and one placed in the center
of the floor. Many seemed to have
occasion to thank someone for the
abundance of mistletoe.
Musid was supplied by a phono
graph-radio hook-up that has never
been used before by the school.
CHRISTMAS HAPPENINGS
Clara Adams' spent the holiday in
Portland visiting relatives and
friends.
Dorothy Huit spent part of her
Christmas vacation in Portland.
Cora Scott spent her vacation at
Top, coming back to Heppner with
her father Monday night.
Bob Swick spent vacation in Mon
ument with his parents.
Mr. Blankenship and family vis
ited relatives in Seattle and Cen
tralia during the vacation. Mi.
Blankenship also attended OSTA in
Portland.
Buddy Blakely was visiting in
Portland during the holiday season,
Edna Stephens and a group of
friends visited Mrs. Florence Dal
zell and others in Condon, Tuesday.
